I am going to try & grow a lot of my own veg this year. It is good for the environment, educational for the DC & could be useful if we run out of food/money! We have grown tomatoes before but that's it Grin

I am trying to use what I have in already & wondered if it is possible to grow peppers from the seeds of one you eat? I'm sure I have seen it done in a video on Facebook but can't find anything like it now!

Thanks in advance!

yes you can. you can dry the seeds out first on some kitchen paper.

peppers take some time to grow. if you sow now you will have some by the end of august. if you have a greenhouse put them in there. you can get fairly inexpensive ones from wilko or amazon (little plastic ones)

Great, thank you, I will give it a try! I don't mind if they take a while. Hopefully it will be something positive to come out of this whole coronavirus thing, learning a new skill & also being a bit more mindful of using what we have.

If you have any other tips along the same lines I'd be glad to hear them please.

My most dependable veg is runner beans. Not the most exciting veg but fresh from the garden they are much nicer than bought. And they look nice when they climb the canes and produce pretty flowers.
I always grow potatoes but they usually get blight so have to be dug up quickly before I'm ready but they are delicious and worth growing - Charlotte is my favourite. I am in the wet west of the country so that makes a difference eg liklihood of blight.

I don't think our garden is big enough for those, Helga, but I have heard you can grow potatoes in buckets so will look into that.

I've grown loads in tubs. I managed to get a load of the black plastic buckets which they use for cut flowers from our local shop.
Last year I grew tomatoes, Sweetcorn, peas, French beans, runner beans, carrots, spuds, cucumber and peppers in them.
This year the ground is sorted so won't be stuck to the containers as much but they will still have a place.

i grew my potatoes in buckets and in the ground last year and they were the best potatoes i have ever eaten. the ones in the buckets did much better than the ground ones.

i used these 30L pots

courgettes are easy and good for beginners.
radishes also are really good and easy...you can grow them in pots on the windowsill and then just keep sowing every couple of weeks for a constant supply throughout spring/summer..

Salad leaves are fantastic and easy to grow in a tub, we get a mixed seed pack each year and then never buy salad all summer just pick what we need, rocket and all different lettuce leaves - good luck!
