Can anyone recommend a gaming console, either hand held or not for a 5 year old who has never used one before? I’m thinking I may well need it in a few weeks.

I don’t have a Wii U, so not sure whether you can use just the standard Wii controllers, which, IMO, would be easier for a 5 year old to use (less obvious buttons, and more intuitive ‘point’ for some games/onscreen selector.

What’s the difference between a Wii remote and a Wii controller. God this is all making me feel so bloody old 😂

Nintendo switch is great especially with mario kart and Disney cars. Lego game is also good.

So could I start with a Wii and 2 remotes and a few games? Then take it from there?

I think it’s just words, and they are the same thing. But I’m no expert Grin

I’d say a pro controller is fiddly to hold - the buttons are all temptingly right by where your fingers/thumbs are, and my 8 year old took a while getting to grips with all the different buttons using a switch (with controllers in pro-controller mode), whereas with a Wii remote (the stick shaped one), despite having pretty much the same amount of buttons, it’s far easier to ignore the ones you aren’t actually using. And for most games, (especially active/games for younger children) you only use a couple of buttons at a time.

Yes, I should think so.

Make sure the games are ones which only need the remotes, and not the nunchucks as well (a joystick-like controller which plugs into the remote, making it a two handed controller). The games should say in the description which controllers are needed, and how many players etc.

The wii remote is the one handed , rectangular controller. The controller is the more traditional 2 handed one you posted the pic of. I think. For the wii I only ever used the remote. Dunno if maybe certain games need the controller. But I'd imagine most can be played with the remote alone.

Pp is defo right that the wii is the best choice for active games :)
