DS in trouble at work

Hi

Just want advice.

My son is 18 and I just wanted to ask for other people’s advice regarding a silly incident.

He works in Tesco part time at the weekend. Recently, he posted something on his Facebook, it was something like “would be great if Tesco would close because of coronavirus so I can have some time off”

DS does not have his manager on his Facebook, so somebody on his has obviously told him. His manager rang him and asked him if he could come in sometime this week to speak to him regarding his social media content.

I just think this is shockingly ridiculous. What exactly has DS said that is so wrong? He obviously didn’t mean anything bad by what he wrote. Surely this is an overreaction?

If there is a Social Media Policy and he’s breached it then he may we’ll get fired

CinnabarRed · 16/03/2020 17:38

I think an awful lot of people would be really upset by that, to be honest.

CinnabarRed · 16/03/2020 17:38

By what DS wrote, I mean.

Most companies have social media policies, it's pretty standard.

Bluntness100 · 16/03/2020 17:39

Has he read his employment contract? Normally you can’t say anything negative about your company on social media.

It was very immature of him and insensitive to boot. I’d be more concerned about that than his manager wanting to have a word. I’d also check his exact wording.

And he doesn’t need to work there. It is not community service.

SouthernComforts · 16/03/2020 17:39

It's a good lesson for him to learn at a young age in a job he probably doesn't care too much about. Never ever post negatively about work on social media, or just don't post at all.

TravellingSpoon · 16/03/2020 17:40

FFS, if that is all he wrote whoever dobbed him in is an arse.

Why on earth would that upset anyone?

CinnabarRed · 16/03/2020 17:42

Because thousands of people are reliant on Tesco and other supermarkets staying open so they can eat?

vingt · 16/03/2020 17:42

It depends what he actually wrote, there is a huge difference between wishing they would close so he could have some time off and (eg) I wish that bloody manager would close the shop because he never lets me have time off

Thisismytimetoshine · 16/03/2020 17:45

He’ll have breached their social media policy with that crashingly stupid post. Do you really not see the problem, op?

Thisismytimetoshine · 16/03/2020 17:46

He may be getting more time off than he anticipated...

Whenisithometime · 16/03/2020 17:47

I don’t see any problem at all. Are you not allowed to have a laugh anymore? He didn’t say anything derogatory about the company.

P.S I’ve asked DS and he’s corrected me, he didn’t mention Tesco in his post. He just said I wish my work would close so I can have time off

gobbynorthernbird · 16/03/2020 17:52

Is this the same son that's been slagging off colleagues on social media and refusing to do as he's told at work?

Whenisithometime · 16/03/2020 17:53

@gobbynorthernbird eh sorry what?? When did I ever say he was slagging of another colleague? I’m confused what you mean?

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/03/2020 17:55

Why on earth is he mentioning his place of work on his SM. It's not shockingly ridiculous. It's normal practice to discipline or terminate for this.

Miraclelover · 16/03/2020 17:55

Are you not allowed to have a laugh anymore?
Not when people are dying in a pandemic situation no you’re not allowed a laugh.

Whenisithometime · 16/03/2020 17:55

@JiltedJohnsJulie he didn’t. I’ve cleared it up, I misunderstood. He didn’t write the company’s name on the post

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 16/03/2020 17:56

He was really daft. It's a lesson learnt and luckily one done at 18 and not later in life like some people I know.

He may get fired and they would be within their rights to get rid of him. He just needs to learn to be more professional.

PeterPanGoesWrong · 16/03/2020 17:58

He sounds like that kid that wants his school to burn down so he doesn’t have to do his Monday maths/physics/PE. Hardly the reaction of a normal adult!
Hopefully he will learn his lesson, don’t bitch about your job or manager or to anyone on social medial. It will come back and bite you.

Thisismytimetoshine · 16/03/2020 17:59

Why did you say he did mention Tesco, op? Confused. It’s a fairly fundamental point to get “wrong”.

Whenisithometime · 16/03/2020 17:59

@Miraclelover we both know he wasn’t laughing at coronavirus itself.

Yes, it is shockingly ridiculous of your son to post this on social media Hmm

What exactly has DS said that is so wrong?

Do you really need to ask? Hmm

Are you not allowed to have a laugh anymore?

It isn’t funny Hmm. I expect he will come back from the meeting with his tail between his legs and his P45 in his hand. I will allow that he is probably too naïve to realise the implications of posting about his job on social media, but you should know better.

IntermittentParps · 16/03/2020 18:03

Why did you say he did mention Tesco, op? It’s a fairly fundamental point to get “wrong”.
I guess the OP was repeating it from memory of seeing it at the weekend. It really isn't a suspicious detail to get wrong.

I think his work are ridiculous. He's not defaming them or giving away sensitive trade secrets or anything. What a busybody the person who reported it is.

WorraLiberty · 16/03/2020 18:06

Honestly OP you are absolutely obsessed with your adult son's job.

He refuses to do what his manager tells him, he slags off another colleague to a new starter and now this.

You're really not doing him any favours by getting so involved.

Whenisithometime · 16/03/2020 18:06

He is in tears right now as he is certain he has now lost his job. I find it bizarre as he didn’t even mention the company name on the post.
