Just a post to say thank you to all the retail workers.

And no. This shouldn't in the CV topic because not everyone hangs out on there.

Anyways I'm aware it's a new start to a very hard week, and that whilst everyone else is flopping about panic buying and building their loo roll forts our retail workers etc are putting themselves at massive risk, handling thousands of people a day, often using public transport to get there and getting fuck all thanks. Some have been attacked and belittled but still go in each day to serve the ungrateful public. All of this with no protection, no masks, no gloves and the bleddy sangel has been stolen off a lot of tills (( my friend works in retail and has started having anxiety attacks as a result of all this. ))

Anyways, thank you. You are all appreciated.

Agree, thank you to those working so hard in our shops and in the supply chain. Supermarkets, corner shops, market traders, all of you.

Well except to the security guard who followed me round the store staring at me then was so ignorant he got in my way so I physically couldn't even walk to the tills...go fuck yourself.

I felt for them today when I went in this morning. Had a chat with the cashier and asked if she was able to get her own shopping, as presumably when she finished her shifts the shelves were empty. She said it was a nightmare and was having to go to smaller shops to stay afloat Sad

Then she said that, as she's over 70, managers had told her to prepare for self isolation and she wouldn't be allowed to work. I know the logic behind it but she looked really quite upset, saying that she feels fine and will really miss all the social interaction.

Seeing all the staff effectively putting themselves 'on the front line' so to speak just so people can buy 117 toilet rolls was quite humbling.

Most of them wont be getting anything other than SSP if they stay home and those in smaller shops will have to go in or the shop will close so they're under a lot of pressure, which is horrendous. People don't realise convenience shops have next to no cover and often have 2 staff members at a time, if one is sick or passes it on and other colleagues self isolate, that store will close or operate reduced hours. I don't imagine the vast majority of retail workers actively want to be risking themselves in this way- there is no work from home option to take advantage of, they have no choice.

People need to make their thanks tangible by paying contactless, washing their hands before visiting, keeping a distance at the till point when possible and limiting what they touch when they browse and shop. Stay at home or send someone else if you have any symptoms whatsoever or live with someone who does, and don't kick off over lack of products etc. I live with a retail manager and they're getting texts left right and centre from staff who feel they're guaranteed to get it if they're made to work and are worried.

By the same token we are worried at home because it feels inevitable it will be brought into the house at some point and I am immune compromised with serious chronic health conditions. Thank them with your hygeine behaviour and social distancing as well as a thanks, if you give that.

My DD19 works in a large brand supermarket and is dreading tomorrow when she goes back after a week off. A week ago she had to have a colleague accompany her when she took a pallet of soap out to the shop floor and people were snatching it before she had chance to put it on the shelves. This week will no doubt be even worse. She's fed up having to explain to people that there is no hand sanitiser in the shop or in the warehouse, despite big signs all over the store saying the same thing.

Thank you so much for this. l've just posted a new thread about this very subject "Supermarket Madness" (l work on a supermarket checkout) about how people have been behaving. lt's so nice when we're appreciated for doing our best to do our jobs under difficult circumstances. x
