New hamster

So my son got a hamster this weekend and it’s going well however I would like him to be able to play with the hamster comfortably so I am trying to encourage him opening the cage and stroking/ petting/ feeding the hamster.

How can I safety take the hamster out the cage without it running off and getting lost ?

Currently we’re using the sofa pillows to make some sort of ‘fort’ to allow the hamster to walk around without escaping however it seems a hassle to do everyday and I don’t know how effective it may be if and when the hamster does do a runner ?

The hamster is 6 weeks old and so far all is well but this is our first pet and I’m terrified of it getting lost.

Hamsters aren’t great for playing with, they are fast and naturally want to hide

Completely disagree with this, particularly with Syrians, assuming you learn to handle them properly. We’ve had four male syrians, males being easier than females, and they’ve all, with the right handling, become extremely tame, easy to handle, lovely little pets.

You can get a large shallow storage box and pop him in it to play and handle, after a few quiet days settling, start by gently handling for just a few minutes each day, hand feed treats such as peanuts, sunflowers seed, timothy hay, apple, broccoli, cucumber and gradually build up.

Kaytee clean & cozy or Carefresh is the best bedding by far, much better and more hygienic than shavings and easy to spot clean.

Ours have been happiest in a big cage, with natural style accessories - log house (ours is actually for guinea pigs but is a good size for a grown male Syrian, from Zooplus) coconut house, sticks to gnaw on, gnaw stone, log bridges and steps etc. They can also have the little vegetable dog chews, we get hedgehog shaped ones from Pets corner.

My dd1’s hammy will sit with her in the crook of her arm while she reads 😊 We’ve recently said goodbye to dd2’s (13) hamster at 2 years old as he had a mouth tumour, he was adorable and I was really sad to see him go.😢

When you change his bedding keep a little of the old bedding to put back in the cage so he will have some of his odour still there and disperse the new bedding around the cage so it gives him something to do. Sorry if you already know this. I used to give him the occasional plain mini dog biscuit (as recommended on a hamster website) to keep his teeth in check. Mine also used to love a tiny occasional piece of cucumber. I love Syrians. He's really cute.

We have gerbils not hamsters but have a play pen type thing for them on the floor with toys so they can get out and run about.

If you’re a bit nervous at putting your hands in the cage or taking him out for exercise, use a spare mug or similarly sized container, put it in the cage with a treat inside and allow the hamster to go in, then lift it out and carry to the play area, bath etc and wait for them to come back out. Some hamsters can nip a little in their cage if suddenly picked up but this works well until they get more used to you.

Thank you all again for the advice. I feel a lot more confident now with my little furry friend Grin
