I guess something good has come of the recent state of affairs in that I've finally had a look through my tins' cupboard lol.

Found some stuff that is out of date, would you risk any/all of these:

Vegetable soup dated dec 2018
Fruit cocktail jam 2017
Peach slices Sept 2017
Beef ravioli feb 2019

Also Thai green curry sauce(aldi) bbe March 2018
And apple chutney July 2017.

And coconut milk, one month outta date too lol.

I think the soup should be fine right? but the curry has fish sauce so guessing it defo needs chucked lol.

Orgh. That's not even a few months. Even if safe, they won't be nice.

gamerchick · 15/03/2020 23:08

If the tins aren't damaged and have been stored in a cool place then they're probably fine. Tins can last for years if stores right.

PickAChew · 15/03/2020 23:08

Urgh, not orgh. Though the latter is a better puke noise.

I'd be wary of the ravioli.

Otherwise, sniff and look and eat if seems ok!

gamerchick · 15/03/2020 23:09

The sooner we get rid of frigging dates the better. Use some common sense type of thing.

feelinguseless101 · 15/03/2020 23:09

I'd eat all of them.

Obviously throw out the damaged ones or ones which don't look ok on opening!

Wanderlust21 · 15/03/2020 23:09

*fruit cocktail jan not jam.

Yeah pp but many tons dont have use by dates they just have a sorta 'best if used by' date.

Canning is a pretty impressive way of preserving food

They found some tins from ww2 era or something and they were still good. Poss spam. So good is maybe pushing it Grin

mocktail · 15/03/2020 23:11

I'd use any of them. Tinned foods lasts years.

BikeRunSki · 15/03/2020 23:12

I’d eat all of them

ifeellikeanidiot · 15/03/2020 23:12

If it smelt ok, I'd eat it all apart from the ravioli. Tbh, I think the ravioli would be fine but I think the though of old meat might turn my stomach a bit.

Wanderlust21 · 15/03/2020 23:15

I wasnt sure about the ravioli because of the beef tbh but a mate said she would risk it so :/ dont think I'll chance it lol

jackstini · 15/03/2020 23:15

All of them
I've eaten tinned stuff way older than that

Ninkanink · 15/03/2020 23:17

All of them. Tinned food will last for decades and be perfectly good to eat.

I’ve watched someone eat beef from a boer war military ration tin. If he made it through that - and he did - you can eat tinned goods that are a few years out of date.

Wanderlust21 · 15/03/2020 23:18

Am I right in thinking the chutney is like jam in terms of preserving?

And I would think the coconut milk would be fine but i was just remembering stories of ppl eating coconuts that weren't ripe and getting the shits. So wondered if they go really bad when outa date too.

OP posts:
ZoeandChandon · 15/03/2020 23:19

All of them, a few years is nothing for a can.

Ninkanink · 15/03/2020 23:19

Tinned food is fine for years. You can safely eat all of that.

Borris · 15/03/2020 23:19

I'd eat it all

jackparlabane · 15/03/2020 23:27

Any of them. The best before date is only for stock control - if undamaged the contents should be fine for a decade or two.

Wanderlust21 · 15/03/2020 23:34

Good stuff! I think I'll risk the soup, fruit, chutney, coco milk then :)

Maybe not the ravioli tho lol

UnitedRoad · 15/03/2020 23:34

All of them as well. You’ll be fine! I had a cup a soup yesterday that was best before 2008. I’m fine!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 15/03/2020 23:37

I’d probably eat all of them too but I have a pretty strong stomach Grin

GroggyLegs · 15/03/2020 23:39

They've got best before dates - they are fine to eat.

Unless they're damaged, tins have no available oxygen = no bacterial growth = no food poisoning.

LittleCabbage · 15/03/2020 23:45

I'd eat them all.

TaterWaffle · 15/03/2020 23:47

I would eat them all!

Obviously check for rust, dents and other damage to the tins. See that the food looks/smells/tastes ok etc.

Should be fine! A right little feast.
