Need advice, should I cancel my holiday?

All inclusive to Turkey booked to fly out on 31st May for a week.

In short, should I just cancel now and try to get my money back? Not sure it's worth looking forward to or chancing losing everything if we won't be able to go due to the dramas of today and however long Sad

It's a 1st world problem but it is crap that we won't have anurbkgng to look forward to. Haven't thought about it too much as I'm too concerned about my lovely nan and getting enough loo rolls in!

Yes cancel

Milosinthebox · 15/03/2020 20:34

I'm due to go away second week of May. Am holding out on cancelling until travel is banned so I have a better chance of claiming on insurance.

amusedbush · 15/03/2020 20:38

I would probably cancel.

We’re booked to go to London for a few days in May for my 30th and even that is looking uncertain. BA has emailed me offering a voucher for the cost of my flights, which I feel is maybe the first step toward them cancelling it on their end nearer the time.

DreamInLavender · 15/03/2020 20:40

Does everyone think that travel to Turkey etc will be banned by late May? Such a shame :( Again, I know people have bigger fish fo fry. I was just so looking forward to some sun with my DS

Yes, you should cancel

OhhhPeee · 15/03/2020 20:41

If you won’t get your money back by cancelling, you might be shooting yourself in the foot. If FCO advice changes and you’re not allowed to travel to Turkey/Turkey is refusing UK nationals by your date of travel, you might be entitled to make a claim on your travel insurance and get your money back. For now leave the booking and wait and see (unless you can get a refund by cancelling now - check your T&Cs).

Howyoualldoworkme · 15/03/2020 20:43

Due to go to Northern Italy on May 30th, I'm going to try and move it to the Autumn and hope for the best Sad

FoodieToo · 15/03/2020 20:44

Yes I agree with waiting. We are booked all inclusive Turley for early July. Will not be cancelling until as near as possible to the date.

Insurance is not covering pandemics and if you just decide you do not want to go you will lose all your money.

amusedbush · 15/03/2020 20:45

Not Turkey specifically but I’d be concerned about travelling anywhere far afield in case something happens when you’re out there and you can’t get back.

I only mentioned my London trip because that’s domestic travel and even that is looking dodgy at this point.

Also, planes and airports will be hotbeds for transmitting the virus - all those people passing through.

mynameiscalypso · 15/03/2020 20:46

I wouldn't cancel yet - we're due to go on holiday on 1st June and I'm assuming at the moment that it will go ahead. It's still 2 1/2 months away and a huge amount can and will change between now and then.

Aragog · 15/03/2020 20:47

We were supposed to be going away at Easter. We've managed to cancel the apartment, car hire and uk hotel and parking for no charge so we've done that. EasyJet is just saying we can move the flights at present so we are holding off doing anything with them. We now know we won't get charged to move the dates up until the day we go. But we're holding off in case they say we cancel for free for now as that would be the easiest option as choosing a new date is tricky.

Crunchymum · 15/03/2020 20:52

We had a family holiday booked for May half term (Turkey, first time with all the kids) and we lost it when Thomas Cook went bust. We never rebooked.... and I'm so bloody glad!!!

DreamInLavender · 15/03/2020 20:54

Does anyone know if ATOL or insurance would pay out and refund me if official government advice is not to go? If not then at least I only lose my deposit if I cancel now

We’re meant to be going to Madeira at the end of April , at the moment , on arrival in Madeira you have to go into quarantine for 14 days ( we’ve only booked a week )
I’m hoping it will be cancelled , or we can book something else later in the year

Obviouspretzel · 15/03/2020 21:14

Cancellation fees for my holiday are tiered - the longer you leave it , the less money back. I can still get about half back but already wishing I had gone with my instincts and cancelled earlier. Might be technically possible to go but will I actually want to when the time comes?

Bairnsmum05 · 15/03/2020 21:17

Atol only refunds you if the company goes bust.

FoodieToo · 15/03/2020 21:56

Obviouspretzel what insurance do you have that allows you just decide you don't want to go and reimburses you ? I am in ireland but have never heard of anything like that.

JulietTango · 15/03/2020 22:21

We were due to go to Australia on Tuesday. Last week I had numerous people telling me we were stupid to go and that we should cancel. We would have got very little money back - we'd booked everything separately. We do have travel insurance booked last June though.

This morning Australia decided they didn't want visitors. We got full refunds on all Airbnb bookings, all booked activities and a voucher for the flights which we'll rebook for this time next year.

UhKevin · 15/03/2020 22:45

Foodie She’s not talking about insurance. She’s talking about provider cancellation policies, eg if you cancel within three months of the holiday start date, you can get 50% back, cancel within seven days and get 25% back etc. Totally varies per provider.

tiredanddangerous · 15/03/2020 22:56

No I wouldn’t cancel yet.
