Can I boast on here?

Because I don't want to boast to friends and colleagues...

DS, who is 5 and in Y1, today read half of a proper chapter book. By himself, with no pressure from anyone else.

Brilliant! I remember my first ‘solo reading’. Keep the book and write and date it.

Fantastic! I'm similarly proud of my six year old who is currently reading Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets - unlike your good self, I've boasted to everybody I know! Grin

dontgobaconmyheart · 15/03/2020 08:11

Lovely! It's sharing, not boasting!

vingt · 15/03/2020 08:30

Brilliant. I think we should all be sharing the positives right now.

RandomMess · 15/03/2020 09:37

Well done DS! I hope he turns into an avid bookworm so you can enjoy the peace GrinWink

👏👏👏
It’s such a lovely milestone! Well done your DS Grin

vingt · 15/03/2020 09:40

What book did he read?

lowlandLucky · 15/03/2020 10:43

I would boast too

C33P0 · 15/03/2020 22:08

Thanks, I don't feel like I can boast as I have friends and family with children around the same age who are struggling with reading. I did tell the grandparents though Smile. @vingt it was "My Naughty Little Sister". It's quite a good type of chapter book to start with as each chapter is a separate story.

That’s brilliant. Well done him!

That's fantastic, and one of my favourite books as a child once my naughty little sister came along!!

sittingonacornflake · 16/03/2020 06:21

Thanks for sharing nice positive news at this time! Well down your little one!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/03/2020 07:22

C33PO, congrats! No wonder you want to share.
And that it was My Naughty Little Sister really did ring a bell. Aeons ago a dd had been a reluctant reader at an early stage (due I’m sure to the boring reading books at school, The Red Pirate’s Sodding Boots etc.). but one day, after I’d been reading her a chapter or two of MNLS, she picked it up and went on reading it - perfectly - by herself. Breakthrough moment!

I’m still fond of it, and especially remember the mother leaving her at home because she was ‘too draggy and moany’ to take to the shops. Which parent can’t relate to that?

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 16/03/2020 12:18

Eccelenté! Of course, this means all the books in your house now belong to her, and will migrate to her bedroom.

bunpot · 16/03/2020 12:27

Aw. This made me tear up a bit. Reading is so important. Congratulations Smile

CoodleMoodle · 16/03/2020 12:47

Ah, that's fantastic! Well done to him.

I understand the reluctance to talk about it - my DD has been reading fluently (in her head) since she was in Reception (now 6 in Y1) and it feels like bragging, but I'm so proud of her. My friend's daughter is a couple of years older and really struggles with reading, and I try not to talk about it too much in front of her. Similarly with a few mums I know from school. I want to shout how proud I am but don't want to boast. It's hard, though!

Long may the reading continue!

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 16/03/2020 12:55

Him, not her. Sorry.

bobstersmum · 16/03/2020 13:40

That's brilliant! My two (year one and two) are fantastic readers BUT don't enjoy reading enough to sit and read for pleasure, which makes me so sad. I loved reading as a child, still do.
