Foxton20 · 14/03/2020 02:52

I had my tonsils out years ago.

A few days ago my throat started hurting but tonight it has gotten so much worse. It’s so painful to even breath yet alone swallow.

Wwyd? Do I just take paracetamol? I don’t know what it could be.
It’s so painful 😩

I don’t know what it could be

It's a sore throat Confused Yes to pain medication if you need it, hopefully you'll feel better soon

Foxton20 · 14/03/2020 03:00

I mean, is it strep throat?

Sorry I’m panicking abit. It’s so painful to even breath

Look into your throat with a light. What can you see?

I find gargling with salty warm water relieves the pain and brings down swelling. I use warm water that was boiled in the kettle and allowed to cool so i know it's sterile.

TeaAndDarkToast · 14/03/2020 03:28

My tonsils were taken out too OP. I use 1 tsp of salt per mugful of water.

Jellybean100 · 14/03/2020 03:30

Quinsy?

Piecarumba · 14/03/2020 04:55

Yes to gargling with salt water, painkillers and doctors in the morning! I get recurrent tonsilitis and have had quinsy before, it’s miserable and if bacterial you’ll need antibiotics. Hope you’re feeling better

HappyExteriorSadInterior · 14/03/2020 05:21

I would call 111 for advice. My brother had a bad case of quinsy many years ago. It goes far beyond a sore throat, his whole throat almost closed up completely, he was in agony and really ill with it. It's like a severe form of tonsilitis. I'm not meaning to worry you just suggesting you should get medical advice because you might need antibiotics.
Best to be safe.
Get well soon Flowers

LefttoherownDevizes · 14/03/2020 05:39

Foxton what can you see when you look? DD has been ill with recurrent sore throat and we have just discovered that 3 years after having her tonsils out that part of them have regrown. It's rare but is possible.

Otherwise you can still get infections in your throat minus the tonsils.

Poor you. Do you have any aspirin you can gargle with? Difflam spray is v good too

LefttoherownDevizes · 14/03/2020 05:40

And I think quinsy is not possible as it's an abscess on tonsils, which you don't have Confused

GiveHerHellFromUs · 14/03/2020 05:50

I'd call 111 if it hurts to breathe

HappyExteriorSadInterior · 14/03/2020 05:55

@LefttoherownDevizes - A previous poster has just explained that it is possible for part of the tonsils to regrow in rare cases. If it's not quinsy it must be something else but in any case OP needs medical advice/attention to find out what it is and get appropriate treatment surely? ConfusedHmm

Squigean · 14/03/2020 06:02

Difflam is very good. The gargle especially (that's not to say the spray isn't but the gargle is more effectove.)

Definitely pain relief - dissolvable I imagine you'll find easier; .ibuprofen effective for inflammation or Solpadine (if you can) otherwise paracetamol.

Rest and contact your GP or a doctor as soon as you can.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 14/03/2020 06:10

Well no Op has a sore throat. A sore throat doesn't necessarily require medical attention.

Quinsy is a abscess, there'd be swelling.

Paracetemol and ibuprofen, alternated. Difflam mouthwash and salt water garbled are good. Rest and fluids. Take a look if you can, what does it look like?

If you are really struggling to breath I would contact 111. If not I'd give it a couple of days to settle and then go the GP if it's not improving. Does it hurt if you breath through your nose?

LefttoherownDevizes · 14/03/2020 06:34

Happy that PP was me!

That’s why I suggested looking

Foxton20 · 14/03/2020 07:42

Ov had a look and where my tonsils would have been it’s all white and slimy

OP posts:
ScribblyGum · 14/03/2020 07:50

Do you have a cough?

Do you have a temperature?

Are you able to drink fluids?

Call 111, you will likely be triaged through to the OOH service where the nurse or GP will want your history and symptoms.

Google FEVERPAIN score.

They may want to look at your throat but if you can give them a clear description of what you can see they may choose to prescribe remotely or advise you to continue with fluids, rest, analgesia and call back if things deteriorate.

Foxton20 · 14/03/2020 07:58

No real fever or cough, just a really sore throat. Swallowing and breathing stings.

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/03/2020 07:59

Ring your doctor, sounds like it might be an infection if it's white and slimy . What have you been taking / doing for it so far?

Mumdiva99 · 14/03/2020 08:02

I used to get very painful tonsillitis regularly....so I understand your pain. It does sound like you need antibiotics - but call your Dr and see what they say. Get the spray from the chemist. And the only thing I could ever eat was a McDonald's milk shake - the cold soothed my throat. (When it was bad there was no way I could swallow a tablet....so maybe kids paracetamol liquid would work...)

Celeriacacaca · 14/03/2020 10:26

You poor thing. Phone your doctor as it sounds like an infection. Difflam spray is very good. Hope you're feeling better soon.

TurkeyBasterHopeItWorks · 15/03/2020 15:54

@Foxton20 - How are you feeling? Have you seen a doctor?

tinybluerose · 15/03/2020 15:57

How are you feeling? Have you seen a doctor?

On a saturday/sunday?
Here they have stopped all routine appointments at GPS- call for daily triage only. A sore throats would be unlikely to get you an appointment.

millymollymoomoo · 15/03/2020 16:11

Gargle with soluble disperin. In a recurrent tonsillitis sufferer and that’s the only thing that helps me

TurkeyBasterHopeItWorks · 15/03/2020 16:41

@tinybluerose - I was only asking. It is not just a sore throat if swallowing and breathing is difficult.
Locally we are lucky to have weekend appointments on rotation at a group of local surgeries plus an out of hours clinic open all weekend. I'm not suggesting calling an ambulance or rocking up at A&E! Confused
