Handsoap in Scottish schools

My 4yo has come crying out of the toilets at school because her hands hurt. A couple of the other parents told me they've changed the soap to some super virus killer Hmm which has caused a few skin reactions. Their kids are older and are taking their own handsoap to school. Which is fine as they have access to their bags etc. They can't access cloakroom in the nursery thoughjust wondered if anyone was in the same situation and had a solution.

Not in Scotland but this has happened to DD, hands suddenly red raw, dry and cracked.

womaninatightspot · 13/03/2020 23:32

Your poor DD. I'm using Norwegian hand cream with DD over the weekend but I don't think it's ok to expect her to use a product that's causing her pain. I actually had to go into Nursery on Wed as she was crying and wouldn't stop but had by the time I got there Confused. In hindsight I'm sure it was that her hands hurt but she couldn't explain what was causing it.

We're in England and my 7 year old ds has really dry and sore skin on his hands. This started before the outbreak though (only by a few months) so wonder if it's a new (cheaper) type of hand wash as it's only a recent-ish problem.

My DD has always had an issue with school foam soap so I send in a bottle of e45 hand wash otherwise her hands get very sore, very quickly.

We have advised some children to bring in the brand they use at home or ask parents what it is so we can try to get some of it in the classroom. It is unlikely to be a 'super virus killer' soap and is more to do with the fact that hands are being washed at very regular intervals. Staff are having the same problem with cracked and sore dry skin. We also give cream to children whose parents have given permission to receive it as the cream is providing some relief.

LeonoraFlorence · 14/03/2020 00:59

Yes. Having that issue here with the school foam soap. Red, itchy hands. Not sure if it’s from washing too much or an issue with the soap.

Playdoughbum · 14/03/2020 01:20

We are getting lots of complaints about this. If you send an alternative your child can use it, or handcream for after. The foam stuff is pretty gentle but there is a LOT of hand washing going on and if hands aren’t rinsed properly (easily done) this seems to make it worse. I promise schools are doing their best. I actually got quite upset about the complaints initially- getting 60 children through a couple of sinks without utter carnage several times a day is quite stressful anyway!

gracielooloo · 14/03/2020 18:03

Same problem here!

I gave my DD’s x3 packs of liquid hand wash each to take in and hand cream for one whose hands were particularly bad.
Think everyone’s using them so will replace when they say they’re finished. (As long as I can get them....!)

I'm in Scotland. Dd's nursery asked us to provide soap for washing hands also hand cream.
When I asked dd yesterday what she had done at nursery she told me she just washed her hands all day and and sang happy birthday🤣🤣🤣

Twix42 · 14/03/2020 18:23

Is she rinsing well?
Just a thought.
Maybe she has an allergy or risk of dermatitis :(

womaninatightspot · 14/03/2020 21:03

She is a bit prone to rashes, had a milk allergy since outgrown and was a teenie preemie so gets bowled over by things quickly. Will buy hand soap (if I can) and send hand cream.

Also check that she's putting water on her hands first, then soap, then rinsing properly, then drying thoroughly. Once hands are thoroughly dry apply moisturiser. My daughter was applying soap first and not rinsing properly a couple of years ago and ended up with chapped, bloody hands. Sorting out her routine and switching to bar soap at home for her made a massive difference.

womaninatightspot · 14/03/2020 21:55

She does put soap on before water I think perhaps that's the way the school have taught her. Then the handwashing is done with surgical thoroughness.

My 6 year old had very sore, red hands but not because of soap - because of the hand sanitiser we had given her to use. The alcohol content was just too much for her little hands to cope with. Lots of moisturiser has helped!

SkelligM · 15/03/2020 08:10

I’m a teacher and the school soap wrecks my hands. Lord only knows what is in it!

BlueThursday · 15/03/2020 08:31

Mine is the same (P1) so I’ve given her Aveeno hand cream to put on at school
