Found a broken coil outside, what does this mean for my car?

My car is a 16 year old Vauxhall. When I got home today I found a broken metal coil on the street where I park my car. Black, probably about 4 or 5 inches across. Is this likely to have come off my car? It is possible that other cars were there, but more likely to be mine.

I've not lived here long, so no idea where to take it at the moment, and don't have money to spare, just enough for MOT in April.

Just wondered if anyone has an idea what it could be, can I still drive? Likely cost of repair?

Thanks in advance. I wouldn't ask if I could afford to take it in for diagnostics, but don't want to waste money if its going to prove too expensive to repair.

When our suspension went it was much more expensive than people here are saying, but itdid go dramatically with a thump and bits falling off the car. Wasn't an expensive car either.
The car cas clearly lopsided when you looked at it and you'll need to get a breakdown truck if it's fallen off, as driving it will scrape on the tyres.

Sad I'll have to scrap the car if it comes to that. I just can't afford it.

Its quite easy to drive to a repair garage in the same town after an mo.t and back there within 10 days. The whole point is to save money.

Not every m.o.t testing station that has a garage attatched can fit in a repair the same day, and let you take the car home.

First, find out if it's your spring. Then go on WhoCanFixMyCar and pitch the job as "Replace front coil springs + MOT on Vauxhall Corsa (year)". It's a blind site, so they won't know you're female. You want the garage that's cheapest with the most jobs done, and then sort by reviews. It's a brilliant way of filtering out the rip off artists.

I've tried to look under the car but can't see any difference on both sides at the front. I did however look from the side because my bumper is too low to see much at the front.

You need to look inside the wheel arch not under the actual car.

Ok ... I've finally got to look properly in the wheel arch and both coils are there and look the same. It's a corsa automatic 03 reg .. I can't see any coils in the back wheel arches, is that correct? The car doesn't look lopsided. Very grateful for advice. Would be great if I don't have this expense.

I've checked the back wheels .. no coils there.

Just to update, I took the car to the garage, turned out both back coils were broken, had them both replaced for £80. Luckily this was just before lockdown!

Yay! How did you choose the garage?

Ijustneed · 18/04/2020 15:22

I looked on the fb local group, chose the one with the best reviews.
