WFH Genuine question...

For those being asked to WFH, are you claiming back expenses? Electricity, heating etc

I think if you had to pay to get broadband installed or had a demonstrable genuine medical need to have the heating on all day you might be able to make a case to HR for it. Otherwise, trying to claim for electricity to boil the kettle and power your laptop would be an absolute pisstake.

Haha. Go on OP, try it and let us know how you get on.

Years ago, before home wifi was the norm my company did pay for me to "have the internet installed" though. This was at a time when they thought WFH was the answer to their high premises costs. Didn't quite work out that way.

You must be better off without commuting costs anyway?

It's not that cheeky. My partner works for an arms length gov organisation. They pay a rate for people being home workers. It's a monthly flat rate. It cost them way less than office space per person. But this is for designated home workers who do it all of the time.

Yes you can claim some WFH expenses but looking at the Gov guidance it's not a lot and it's quite limited. But if your work are asking you to work from home you shouldn't feel guilty about asking them to help with costs that they would incur if you were at the office.

I think for some people on low wages having to pay for heating all day is an extra cost they might not be able to afford. If they have a season ticket for transport they're not saving anything by not using it.

Interesting responses here. We’ve given our team expense forms to claim back any expenses incurred from WFH - I imagine their phone bills will be higher than normally and wouldn’t expect them to pay out for these.

MPs can class their home as home office and get a proportion of their electricity etc paid for..... for info!

I work from home full time, everyone works from home and they cover my broadband bill and pay a small amount every month to go towards bills or little bits you need.

I was asking as someone I work with who can WFH was asking.

I don't have the option to WFH in my role.

Thanks for the replies though. I wasn't sure as I have worked for a company in the past where if you WFH for a certain amount of days you can claim a % of the costs of running your "home office"
