How can I get the smell of smoke off a bag?

Well miffed about this, treated myself to a nice new changing bag off eBay from someone second hand, she didn’t mention in the advert that it was from a smoking home, but it bloody stinks of stale smoke. Can’t use it cos to me it smells so horrible. If I put my dds clothes in there they are also going to stink too. It’s not the right material to go in the washing machine it’s sort of leathery effect. I sprayed febreeze on it and left it outside to air but it hasn’t helped at the two smells have merged together

It's worth asking a dry cleaner if they can help.

Also I'd be really tempted to leave neutral feedback for the seller.

Good idea will try dry cleaners

Coffee beans. Put them inside the bag and they absorb the odours.

springydaff · 13/03/2020 13:53

Spray vodka, apparently. Its what the vintage sellers do

BamboozledandBefuddled · 13/03/2020 13:56

Dry cleaning won't always shift the smell of smoke. Could you soak it in warm water and white vinegar? I've used that frequently and it works.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 13/03/2020 14:01

Could you try massaging layer of bicarb inside and out, leaving on as long as possible to absorb/neutralise the odour,
(plus hang outside for daylight & fresh air), then remove excess with a lightly damp cloth and allow to dry fully?

What a pain! I'd be hacked off, too.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 13/03/2020 14:49

How was it packaged? The reason I ask is that some mailing sacks do smell of smoke even when from a smoke-free environment.

Also I'd be really tempted to leave neutral feedback for the seller

Without giving the seller a chance to put things right? Hmm

mencken · 13/03/2020 16:15

yuk. Contact seller but if no joy, leave it outside (under rain shelter) for a few weeks.

LASH38 · 13/03/2020 16:20

I would put it in a sealed bag with bicarbonate. Then febreeze and leave outside.

HTH.

16more · 13/03/2020 16:21

@JigsawsAreInPieces it was just in a cardboard box. Defo not the way it’s been packaged cos everything in it stinks as well - the changing mat and cross body bag it comes with. Really disappointed. Gonna try some of these on the bottom of the bag to make sure it doesn’t ruin it thanks everyone. I have also put a sachet or room fragrance inside it. Fingers crossed

Get a couple of tubs of bicarbonate of soda. Put the soda and the bag into a bin bag. Knot it and leave it for a couple of days. It should help.

ZoeandChandon · 13/03/2020 17:10

Send it back, item not as described and unusable.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 13/03/2020 17:55

Bicarb as above. Use the hoover afterwards.

catgotyourtongue · 13/03/2020 18:00

My mum asked me to sell a couple of coats on ebay for her. She is a smoker and I'm not. I've washed the coats THREE times and left them to dry outside. I personally won't be selling them because they still stink of stale smoke but to her they don't.

If I were you, I would send the bag back because of the smoke smell.

OneHanded · 13/03/2020 18:14

Seal it in a bag with an odour absorber?

16more · 13/03/2020 19:05

I was tempted to complain and send it back but not sure I can be bothered with the faff. I’ve just bought an odour eliminator bag from amazon which had really good reviews about getting rid of smoke smells in cars so hoping this works and then I will clean the outside of it. But I’ve now technically spent another £10 on the bag which I’m not happy about

Febreeze? Or leave on the line on a windy day. My SIL smokes and any gifs she gives the DC stink, try on the line first.

CatsMother66 · 13/03/2020 19:11

I have done this and it worked.... pack the bag with crunched up newspaper. Place it in a black bin liner and pack around it with more scrunched up newspaper. Seal the bag and leave it in a cupboard for one maybe two weeks. The newspaper will absorb the smell. I bought a leather bag from a charity shop and it was only when I got it home that I noticed the smoke smell. Smell totally went by doing this.
