Would you consider this birthday party strange?

DS is about to turn two but we're postponing a party due to Coronavirus as we'd normally do soft play.

By moving it a couple of months the weather will be better so are thinking about a Forest School party as DS loves the outdoors, followed by food and a chance to change clothes at our home.

Forest School would entail activities and crafts etc outdoors in the woods. It's done regardless of the weather.

Would you go to something like this if invited?

That sounds amazing!

LambChopsMcGee · 12/03/2020 20:57

Yes sounds great!
I didn't know that was even possible! How do you do that?? I'm keen for DD!

It's unusual, but definitely in a good way. Nothing wrong with being weird anyway...

EssentialHummus · 12/03/2020 20:57

Sounds lovely, but why home for food and clothes? Ditch the clothes change and just have a picnic next to / in the forest school place?

I would. But there will be plenty of parents who won't be so keen if the weather isn't great.

Leeds2 · 12/03/2020 20:59

I would think it was great, and DD would've attended whatever the weather.

INeedNewShoes · 12/03/2020 20:59

Sounds perfect and far far preferable to soft play for me!

Hippee · 12/03/2020 21:00

All the DC have done Forest School on the holidays and loved it. DD has been to party too, and enjoyed it.

TeenPlusTwenties · 12/03/2020 21:01

If you're postponing due to CV then don't book it for 2 months away as we might well be in a 'worse' situation then than we are now.

(Age 2 seems a bit young for that kind of party to me.)

Twickerhun · 12/03/2020 21:02

Sounds better than soft play sorry to me!

Twickerhun · 12/03/2020 21:02

*Party not sorry

I was thinking this, it sounds lovely but not sure how much my 2 year old dd would get from it, might be slightly more suited for a bigger child, but then we haven't been before so I could just be basing that on my idea of what it would be like.

Redtartanshoes · 12/03/2020 21:03

At 2 I really wouldn’t bother. Sorry

DoubleAction · 12/03/2020 21:05

2 is probably too young but my DCs had some lovely birthday parties organised by the local wildlife trust. Pond dipping and bug hunting etc

SpaceDinosaur · 12/03/2020 21:07

Hire a hall?

I think that correct school (although awesome!) is better suited to a little older children.

Can you hire a venue and an entertainer or a soft play then do lunchboxes?

Is your covid-19 concern the children with each other or the general public?

SpaceDinosaur · 12/03/2020 21:07

*forrest not correct 😂

FairfaxAikman · 12/03/2020 21:08

Teen I wouldn't be booing till we have a clearer picture of what's going on.

I'm not worried about CV per se it's just that it's creating a lot of uncertainty right now.
This is the forest school DS goes to once a week anyway so easier to organise at shorter notice than soft play.

To answer a PP the reason for home is there's not really a suitable place for a picnic and the site is at the end of out (albeit long) street anyway. It's 10 mins walk.

I'm currently organising a similar thing for my 5 year olds birthday in June. For those asking, check your local wildlife trust as ours do a party package which included wildlife activities such as den building, bug hunting and Bush craft activities. The parties I have looked at are recommended for age 4+ so might be worth checking that what you are looking at is suitable. Everyone I've mentioned it too though has said what a good idea it is for the kids.

luckylavender · 12/03/2020 21:09

I think it sounds great for older children

Reginabambina · 12/03/2020 21:11

They’re called bushcraft parties where we are and they are all the rage.

FairfaxAikman · 12/03/2020 21:11

Ds already goes to their toddler sessions so they have the set up for younger kids.

He just loves being in the woods - I've never known a kid like him.

Sounds great, and I agree no problem for 2 year olds. My DD went to a forest stay and play from about 18 months, and has done first preschool a day a week since turning 2. Bad weather is only a problem for adults, kids care at all.

FairfaxAikman · 12/03/2020 21:15

Is your covid-19 concern the children with each other or the general public?

Neither really. It's the uncertainty- we don't know what else will be put in lockdown next. Football matches are already behind closed doors and the Pro14 rugby season suspended and even places like our local cinema is introducing new measures.
We just feel like we can't book any place without the risk of it being put into lockdown (voluntarily or otherwise)

sohypnotic · 12/03/2020 21:16

Forest preschool rather, not first preschool

goingtotown · 12/03/2020 21:22

A 2 year old seems far too young it would be a big responsibility to look after a group of 2 year olds especially having them change their clothes & feed them unless you’ll have lots of help. I’d wait until he was older.

Buyitinbamboo · 12/03/2020 21:44

It's fine but unnecessary imo. At 2 he wont care either way. Just cancel the party and do something next year
