Can anyone give me ideas of areas close to the centre to stay in for the weekend. We are a group of 50somethings and dont want to be too wild, pubs not clubs and a good Chinese and Indian restaurant would be great. Thank you

The Midland Hotel is lovely, but pricey.

lowlandLucky · 12/03/2020 19:54

We wont be going until February but we like to be organised.

Next February?

How far are you willing to travel from your base ?
If you are in the city center there are very good tram links to bury , altringham , Ashton, airport a day ticket cost about 5.50
What kind of thing would you like to do ? There are loads of very good museums, the science and industry + imperial war museum ate a must imo.
Obs there are two big football clubs that you could go to watch a match at
It you like shopping the Trafford centre has loads of shops and the food court has some good choices .
Cholton is a very vibrent place loads of independent bars , cafes and restaurants.
It also has cholton ees, water park which is a great place to walk, very nice ( flat no hill walking)

I don’t like Chinese food but everyone raves about the Yang Sing. The Mackie Mayor is great for lunch - very busy for dinner at the weekend (or tea as us Mancs call it!). The Lowry is a fab hotel, for Indian food I’d jump a cab to the curry mile in Rusholme. As PPs have said, great museums and the Whitworth Art galllery. The Lowry exhibition at the Lowry centre is wonderful. Northern Quarter is great for poking around little independent shops during the day but a bit raucous at night. Avoid the Britannia Hotel - it’s a hole.

We’ve stayed at Hotel Indigo right next to Victoria train station, and it was lovely.

Thank everyone for your suggestions, Cholton sounds good. can you do a boat trip on the MSC and is it worth it ?

Chorlton, not Cholton!

chockaholic72 · 13/03/2020 15:40

I wouldn't do the MSC cruise personally, it takes literally all day (you basically go to Liverpool) and then you're bussed back and the views are nowt special. If you wanted to nip further out for a bit of greenery I'd recommend either Tatton Park or Lyme Park - the former you'd get the quick train to Knutsford, and Lyme Park you'd go jump on the train to Disley. I'd save a boat ride for a weekend in Liverpool and do the ferry across the Mersey.

If you want decent pubs the Briton's Protection and Peveril of the Peak are both really great traditional pubs. The Ox Noble in Castlefield is ace too - you could do the Museum of Science and Industry the same day.

Yang sing in centre of Manchester is a must.

vikkimoog · 13/03/2020 15:46

Oh, and the mak addy pub for drinks.
or the midland for posh drinks. amazing atmosphere

Callimanco · 13/03/2020 15:49

If you're visiting Manchester you don't want to be based in Chorlton. It's nice but it's way out in the suburbs. Like visiting London and staying in Crouch End.

There are some good air b and bs in the new Riverside developments in Salford, walking distance to the bright lights.

Hoppinggreen · 13/03/2020 15:51

Best Indian in the City Centre is Bundobust

Squirrelblanket · 13/03/2020 16:37

Chorlton is a nice area for Manchester but not a tourist must see type place. Apart from Beech Road it's mainly chicken and charity shops.

I don't think there are many places in and around the centre of Manchester that I'd recommend. If you were prepared to go a bit further afield you could look at the Saddleworth villages. Plenty of pubs, restaurants. There's a good Chinese and a few Indian restaurants in the area too.

Fingermoose · 13/03/2020 16:50

For a day trip you can do a shorter boat trip from Spinningfields to the Lowry outlet centre via the BBC and media city, and either break your trip or come straight back. It's with Manchester River Cruises. I'm not on commission, we did it for a work do.

If there are a few of you you could get an aparthotel in the Northern Quarter. I wouldn't stay in the suburbs and travel in when there's so much to do in the city.

Bundobust is great but I think there's no bookings, so you might struggle at the weekend with a large group. I'd recommend Ashas or EastZEast too.

Yang Sing is very well known and very good. Wings near the town hall is supposed to be great too but expensive.

There are lots of little pubs to try - the Marble Arch, the Castle and Sinclairs Oyster Bar are good. If you like real ale try Beermoth. It's not pubby but does a very good range of beer and it's just off the main shopping street.

granadagirl · 13/03/2020 16:59

I think personally you’d be better staying in the centre of MCR, there’s loads of pubs within walking distances
You could even do apartments for the weekend not just hotels
You can also get tram to Trafford Centre if you fancy bit of shopping in one contained area.
Any 40 buses will take you from city centre to Didsbury or get mini bus taxi
loads of traditional pubs on same road and restaurants. Nice area and popular
From city centre again any 40’s buses or mini bus to
Famous curry mile in Rusholme
In city centre there’s China Town, loads of restaurants
Nice Chinese very popular on Upper Brook Street, 10 mins from city on 50 bus route called Tai Pan
Then there’s Heaton Moor, few traditional pubs all in same road
Indian called Kushoom Koly plus many more
Nice area, all ages no trouble

lowlandLucky · 14/03/2020 08:45

Thanks everyone, with all your suggestions we have decided an an apartment in the centre and we have added an extra night as 2 nights doesnt seem long enough to fit it all in. We never thought of going out into the countryside but we think a wander out for Sunday lunch sounds like a great idea. Thanks again
