Would you travel to turkey next week?

Background is we have a work conference in Turkey next week. 4 of us attending. Work still happy for us to go and I think there's very very few cases of coronovirus reported in Istanbul which is where we'll be. Two out of the 4 of us are worried about going. I was fine but I'm getting a bit jittery and don't want to be stuck abroad. What would you do? Very worried and confused.

Not a chance

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 12/03/2020 23:55

No

bemoreeverything · 12/03/2020 23:58

They are screening people with thermal cameras upon arrival so if you are so much as a tiny temperature it could land you in a bit of a mess

Divebar · 13/03/2020 00:02

I wouldn’t go but to clear up a point from an earlier poster you do not breath recycled air in a plane. It is replaced ( if that’s the right word) more frequently than if you were on a bus or underground train. But no I wouldn’t go.

heartsonacake · 13/03/2020 04:44

You will be in a sealed tube breathing recirculated air for 4 hrs.

TorkTorkBam Actually the air on a plane is not what you need to be concerned about. The air filtration system on an aeroplane is so good it’s nearly on par with a hospitals. It’s 50% recirculated, 50% fresh, and the air that is recirculated is filtered so well it removes 99% of contaminants.

Your likelihood of catching any illness through the air on a plane is exceedingly low because the filtration system is so high.

Still, in regards to the OP I wouldn’t be flying to Turkey, but that’s more because I wouldn’t want to be stranded there. Worrying about that, catching Coronavirus through touching everything everyone else has are legitimate concerns, but you needn’t worry about catching it through the planes air system.

heartsonacake · 13/03/2020 04:46

Also to add to my above post, the air on a plane is refreshed entirely every two to four minutes, so you are not breathing in the same air for even five minutes on a plane.

pelirocco123 · 13/03/2020 04:46

Just an aside the air in a plane is hepa filtered

GinAndNightnurse · 13/03/2020 04:55

Me too Sunny especially as it borders Iran. I think there is something lacking in either the testing or the reporting.

adaline · 13/03/2020 06:23

I think your workplace is highly irresponsible in allowing this to go ahead.

Most have banned travel and are encouraging people to WFH where possible.

Couch25k · 13/03/2020 08:07

Not a chance no!

Mlou32 · 13/03/2020 08:51

It isn't really about whether or not there are many coronavirus cases in Turkey. It's about the whole journey, so lingering in the airport, sitting in a crowded aircraft, the busy journey from the airport to where you need to be.

Companies have the technology to easily to video conferencing the days. They should be using it.

pasturesgreen · 13/03/2020 09:07

I wouldn't. I'm surprised the conference is still going ahead, tbh. Although by next week the decision might be taken out of your hands anyway, the rate cancellations are going now.

bemoreeverything · 13/03/2020 09:15

It isn't really about whether or not there are many coronavirus cases in Turkey.

It should be. Turkey has 2 cases. Just 2. It really should be about minimising their risk.

It's about the whole journey, so lingering in the airport, sitting in a crowded aircraft, the busy journey from the airport to where you need to be.

So it's about the person from the U.K. (with hundreds of cases) staying safe travelling, rather than the person from the U.K. not wanting to potentially take it to turkey?

NorthernGravy · 13/03/2020 10:16

Nope. You might get there but who knows how you would get back.

Dowser · 13/03/2020 10:41

Thanks for the info about plane air we travel back to uk in two weeks

Mlou32 · 13/03/2020 10:54

What on earth are you talking about? Why are you taking my post and twisting a meaning out of it which is as far from what I meant as possible? Did you do it deliberately or did you genuinely not understand?

Minimsing everyones risk isn't about simply saying ok there aren't many cases in Turkey, therefore it's fine to travel. No. The entire journey, from home to airport, plane journey and airport to destination, along with obviously bearing in mind the current state of infection rates within the country is what matters. Sorry maybe I should have said isn't really ONLY about whether or not there are many coronavirus cases in Turkey'. However I thought that much was obvious.

"So it's about the person from the U.K. (with hundreds of cases) staying safe travelling, rather than the person from the U.K. not wanting to potentially take it to turkey"

Well no, it's about keeping both the people, not person, travelling from the UK safe, along with the people in the recieving country, along with anyone else along the way, safe.

Powergower · 13/03/2020 12:17

The trip has been cancelled. My cousin works at Gatwick and he told me it's still busy as ever. People still flying out on holiday and returning too. No screening at all.

OP posts:
Xiaoxiong · 13/03/2020 12:58

I definitely wouldn't go. One of my colleagues went on holiday for a long weekend last week to a country with only 3.7 cases per million of population and he's just been told he has to self-isolate in the hotel for the next 2 weeks thanks to someone on his plane on the way out there. He only had enough stuff for the weekend so is a bit stuck!

Xiaoxiong · 13/03/2020 12:59

Oh phew - glad it's been cancelled and been taken out of your hands.

bemoreeverything · 13/03/2020 13:09

What on earth are you talking about? Why are you taking my post and twisting a meaning out of it which is as far from what I meant as possible? Did you do it deliberately or did you genuinely not understand?

Oh calm down for goodness sake.

You talked about the risk to the OP. I pointed out the risk to turkey. No need to get your knickers in a twist and act as if I did anything remotely wrong.

iguanadonna · 13/03/2020 20:16

Nope

Mlou32 · 14/03/2020 07:26

@bemoreeverything I don't really need to calm down "for goodness sake", I'm not uncalm. You deliberately misconstrued what I had said, I was simply putting you straight.

StealthPolarBear · 14/03/2020 07:28

The op updated early on and said she wasn't going!

Sostenueto · 14/03/2020 07:36

Go hope you don't get it and don't expect government to get you home if they shut their borders so realise you may be there a long time, and if you manage to escape a shutdown, make sure went you get into GB you go home and isolate yourself and your family for at least 7 days so people like me are protected from people who still insist on traveling. Oh and good luck with keeping 2 metres away from your family during isolation, hope you have a spare bedroom and spare bathroom and don't use a taxi or public transport to get home from airport either! So if you are happy with all that then.......

StealthPolarBear · 14/03/2020 07:37

Can people not see the ops posts? Or mine for that matter? Hello?
