Copper coil vs mirena

I'm 3 weeks post c section and have booked my appointment to have a coil fitted in 2 weeks.
I'm really struggling with the pros and cons of copper coil vs mirena.
I've had the mirena coil in previously with no problems but I would like to know about all the options
Any help/advice is appreciated

I had a copper coil fitted and was happy with it, apart from the fact my period, which was textbook beforehand (regular, lasted 5/6 days, light cramping) became 7/8 days, very heavy, flooding (to the point I was dizzy at times), still regular but really quite uncomfortable.
I am pregnant now but when I go back on contraception I am going to try the mirena, I am wary of the hormones but the thought of having those heavy periods with a young child worry me a bit.

Mirena coil is fab, I haven't had periods for years

I experienced numerous problems with hormonal contraceptives after I had my son. As such I tried the copper coil, having it fitted a few months ago. I've had heavier periods since, but they do seem shorter than in the past and far more regular.

I have the copper coil. My periods were already quite painful and heavy. It didn't make them any worse (or better).

I tried the pill a long time ago but it made my PMT a lot worse and the rest of the month as miserable as the pre-pill PMT had been so I decided any form of hormonal contraception was not for me.

I had the copper IUD fitted in November after two years of hell with an implant. First period was longer and heavier (which was not unexpected) but after that have calmed down considerably. Period regular as clockwork now, get heavy quite quickly but disappear just as quick. I was also warned of potential crippling cramps but barely a thing - just enough to know AF is on the way. Period lasts five days at most and not any heavier than I'd ever experienced before (with the implant, pill or without) definitely not unmanageable at all.

Implant made my life a nightmare and now so glad to be free of hormones. Feel myself again and that alone is worth putting up with monthly periods.

I also switched to using a mooncup at the same time as getting the implant and that's been life changing as well. I'd read on here that others had experienced shorter periods as a result of using mooncups - not sure about the science behind that or if it's even a thing but that might be playing in to my periods being so manageable.

I am on my second copper coil, I love it. Periods are fine, only annoying side effect is constipation-which is not all the time, it’s on and off. I get to have another one when this one runs out and that’ll be me firmly in menopause territory anyway.

I had a copper coil fitted after DD was born. I love it. My periods are maybe marginally heavier but I’ve really had no problems and plan to get another when this one expires.

My gp warned me away from the copper coil because of the effects on your period. Said Mirena was much better.
...but didn't go for either in the end and my DH had the snip!

I’ve never wanted to use hormonal contraceptives so have had a copper coil for almost ten years. My periods always used to be medium - heavy and in the first year of the copper coil may have been slightly heavier but not to the extent I think it outweighs the pros. In the past couple of years my periods have gotten much shorter and lighter, which is probably unconnected though.

CatBatCat · 12/03/2020 11:25

I've had both. The copper coil made my periods twice as painful and twice as heavy and eventually, my mooncup sucked it out by accident. I then got a mirena and the bleeding and pain went away completely. No other side effects and I don't even remember its there. I will be getting another when it runs out next year.

Unless you have issues with hormonal contraception I don’t see any point in going with the copper coil. Mirena often gets rid of your periods all together
