Does anyone eat normally and stay a healthy weight.

A normal diet to me would be say:

Breakfast: Scrambled Egg On 1 slice Toast /Fruit & Greek Yogurt/ 2 Slice of whole meal toast and smashed avocado

Lunch: Bowl of Soup with Salad whole meal bread Sandwich/ Small Portion of left overs from previous nights dinner / baked potato with half a tin of beans

Dinner: Vegetable and tofu stir fry/ Chickpea stew with wholemeal couscous / small slice of home made vegetable quiche with green veg and home made oven chips.

Snacks: A few nuts and a bit of fruit x 1 herbal teas, two black teas with milk and a small cookie or square of chocolate x 1

Water: 6 - 8 glasses of water a day.

Is this about normal for a 5 foot 5 woman? I have been using my fitness pal to log my food and I seem to be eating 1600 to 1800 calories a day but I’m not losing weight at all, it just creeps up. I am wondering if I’m deluding myself about how much I can eat? What I am eating doesn’t seem unreasonable and I’m often hungry so I can’t see eating any less.

Note: I don’t eat meat and I exercise by walking, doing yoga and some light weights a few times a week.

What is normal food like for you if you are a normal weight and maintain that with out suffering. I don’t mean being skinny just a normal healthy weight.

Thanks!

I’m your height and am older and the heaviest I have ever been is around 9.5 stone. The big difference with me to a lot of people is I have no desire whatsoever to eat chocolate or sweets, as a child my Easter eggs would go off. Everyone is different but I have always really liked meat and veg, even fruit with its sweetness is not for me though I make myself eat a piece every day. I am a natural avoider of sweet stuff all my life just because I don’t like it. I remember the communal biscuit and cake tin at work, people used to get annoyed becuse I wouldn’t join in and try and persuade me to eat them.

I’m slim and 5’7”
I do a lot of running (usually at least 10k a day)
A normal day is

Toast x2
A portion of leftovers is lunch
Dinner is usually pasta with a sauce and veg/veggie curry/fried rice dish/risotto etc etc
I’m vegan which helps a bit

I’ve always got crisps and sweet things in the house and will have a few but never loads

Try protein shakes and weight training. It'll tone you, make you stronger and ultimately you will feel better about yourself. I'm not talking powerlifting or body building, just low impact weight training. Look it up, you might like it.

I think that many calories is too many to be losing weight, especially if you don't do much high impact exercise.

I am pretty sedentary and if i want to lose weight can only eat around 1200 - 1350 calories per day.

HardWorkShy · 11/03/2020 13:13

I find salad boring and not very filling, so I don't bother. I usually eat:

Overnight oats.
Greek yoghurt with berries.
Smoothie.
Boiled eggs.

Jacket potato with cottage cheese and side of roast veg.
Roast sweet potatoes.
Stir fry with pesto. I do a huge portion and eat it cold for leftovers the next day. Yum!
Couscous with veg.

Homemade curries, heavy on the veg, watch the coconut milk for calories.
Homemade ramen with lots of veg.
Roast veg with cottage cheese.
Eggs with salsa and veg

I do eat rye bread, but I'd save it for when you're in maintenance.

I need to be under 1,000 cals to loose. Its getting harder as I get older. I'm 48 5ft 7 and 9st 8. I am calorie counting with the weight watchers app and aiming to eat mainly protein and fruits and veg. That is with zero exercise and quite a sedentary job. Its a balance for me of hating exercise so have to restrict my diet to maintain a weight I think is right for me.

RUOKHon · 11/03/2020 18:41

I need to be under 1,000 cals to loose

What can you even eat for 1000 cals?

I’ve only had 650 so far today according to MFP but I’ve just inputted what I’m having for dinner and it’s taken me over 1000. I’d be starving on only 1000 a day. How miserable. Is it worth it to lose a few pounds? (That’s more of a rhetorical question.)

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 11/03/2020 18:48

I would barely have the energy to get out of bed with less than 1000 calories (on a regular diet, not the odd day). How is that even sustainable? The older we get, the more we need to exercise and work with (some) weights. Starving and exhausted is not the way forward.

I8toys · 11/03/2020 18:59

I'm not starving in any way. I just eat things that are low fat or protein based. Its just a change in the way of thinking about how I eat. Lots of omelettes, salad, chicken, prawns, lots of fruit, homemade ratatouille. I do save my points and have a sort of cheat day with carbs and alcohol at the weekend. Its just the way I like it.

springydaff · 11/03/2020 19:23

I eat
B:1oz carb, 4oz protein, 8oz milk/yoghurt, 4oz fruit, tbsp ground linseed
L: 4oz protein, 6oz veg, 6oz salad, tbsp oil
S: ditto lunch

Losing steadily at the moment. When I get to a look that is right for me i'll be adding 4oz (complex) carbs to both lunch and supper.

I'm in recovery for food addiction and this is the suggested amount for my height (5'2") and activity level (currently not much action going on with me). I drink lots of tea and coffee but generally don't have milk because I'm not keen. Lots of water to keep me hydrated. No booze at the mo because I recently got into trouble with it so that's out for now.

It's a lot of food, even without the carbs at L+S at the mo. I really enjoy my food and I'm never hungry - except today when I ate out and had a kind of curry thing - lovely, but so much white rice, hardly any protein or veg. 2 hours later I was hungry.

Zero sugar/pastry etc. I don't miss it - it's all or nothing with me and I much prefer my life without it because I am a madwoman on it.

springydaff · 11/03/2020 19:24

^^Suggested amount for reducing

Growingboys · 11/03/2020 19:35

I eat intuitively, but try to get as near to my five a day as I can. And I try to vary what I eat as well.

I eat more than you describe and am 5ft 6in and a slim/normal size 12.

I do quite a lot of exercise and drink loads of water and green tea. But I also shovel in handfuls of jelly beans when I'm bored at work and have crisps nearly every single day.

The best way to lose weight is to stop trying. Sounds easier than it is though.

springydaff · 11/03/2020 20:43

Shirt, to clarify if anyone's listening I have 1oz protein for breakfast, not 4oz.

Lunch + supper: 4oz protein OR 8oz pulses OR 2 eggs OR 2oz cheese.

There's NO WAY I could eat intuitively! Intuitive to me is : Stuff Face.

People like me ie a food addict can't get hungry. I'm in trouble if I get hungry. This food plan sustains me and I am not hungry. I am also reducing.

I , according to BMI, about 5lbs overweight but I don’t particularly look it and am happy at the weight I’m at. This is the weight that I level out at when I eat what I want...and I genuinely do eat exactly what I want - at least one bar of chocolate a day, as many carbs as I fancy, a mix of very healthy meals and some absolute crap. My weight doesn’t ever go up my more than a couple of lbs unless I’ve been on holiday or over Christmas and I must eat way more than 1500 calories per day. I only ever lose weight if I’m stressed or anxious as it just falls off then. I gave up dieting years ago as it was bad for my mental health.
