Hand wash/bar soap for sensitive hands

DD's hands are red raw with tiny raised bumps (she had it in the summer to a lesser extent, eventually solved with hydrocortisone and just rinsing hands with water).

She thinks it's bad at the moment due to more thorough hand washing and antibac gel. Can anyone suggest a mild hand wash/bar soap please?

I'd reduce gel use and do more washing with soap and water. Perhaps carry some moisturiser to use after every wash. If funds permit you could also try buying handmade soap which generally has more glycerine and moisturising oils than standard bar soap.

Mrsjayy · 10/03/2020 09:27

I would hang back on gel use she is probably using to much. Non perfumed bar soap or maybe a baby soap definitely. Go to the chemist and get something for it.you can also use aqueous cream as soap

I am using Tesco own liquid soap it's the best I've found that isn',t drying my hands out.

How about Dermol 500? It can be used as soap and moisturiser. I always use it during the winter otherwise my skin cracks.

PelicanPie · 10/03/2020 09:46

Use ordinary soap. A lot of hand washes contain SLS which I find wrecks my hands.

Clymene · 10/03/2020 09:47

Moisturise every time she washes her hands. The eczema association say you need to moisturise within 3 minutes to prevent damage.

I've also been putting sudocrem on my hands at night which is helping

Olive oil soap, try Holland and Barrett.

Housewife2010 · 10/03/2020 10:03

Definitely use natural soaps which are high in oils. They will leave an oily after feel on the hands but still clean very well. I have very dry eczema prone hands and notice the difference with natural oily soaos. This is excellent. www.boots.com/little-soap-company-unperfumed-soap-for-sensitive-skin-110g-10196455

Definitely bar soap, I have bad eczema and recently bought some liquid soap again and my hands have suffered.

Pedallleur · 10/03/2020 10:08

Simple hand wash or Wrights Coal tar? We use the latter and never had any issues with it. 99p in Savers or Morrisons. Pears is similar but dearer

PickAChew · 10/03/2020 10:08

I like the sainsburys fig and jasmine. Lathers well, not too drying and the fragrance is pleasant and, importantly for me, very subtle. It still smells like soap, rather than a perfume shop.

Handwash wrecks my hands.

Dettol make an antibacterial bar soap for sensitive skin.

QuinoaWest · 10/03/2020 10:10

SoapySkin do an unscented goat's milk, honey and oat pure bar soap.
(By mail order)

No personal experience of it, but friend with very bad allergic rashes swears blind it's relieved her soreness/red patches better than anything she's tried in past 7 years.

Found its site!

I have the same problem. I use this company I find the Goats milk & Oat, Chef bar & Oatmeal & honey particularly soothing. They do an unscented bar too. As pp have said tell her to stop with the antibacterial for now. I use E45 daily hand cream too or Aveeno.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 10/03/2020 10:18

Sorry my phone corrected antibac gel to just antibacterail Hmm

iVampire · 10/03/2020 10:19

Baby soap or the Simple range

Minimise use of gel (though there always will be done times when there is no sink)

Get a really good moisturising cream eg Neutrogena Norwegian formula, and use creams sold for nappy rash (barrier and soothing) when she can leave it to sink in (including overnight, inside washable ideally cotton gloves)

Also have her wear gloves as much as possible when out and about - minimising what her hands touch means she might not need to wash them with current frequency (though of course she’ll still need to do it a lot). Cheap gloves sold for runners by places like Sports Direct wash well

BiarritzCrackers · 10/03/2020 10:21

My work means I wash my hands several times an hour - I do them dozens of times a day, and Waitrose Essential hand wash and bar soap are the best things for me, through trial and error. If I have to use other products, then soreness, cuts and irritation returns. They are also cheap.

QuinoaWest · 10/03/2020 10:22

@BernardsarenotalwaysSaints

Ooh, I like the rustic look of those.
You may have just solved a birthday present dilemma for my SIL.
Thanks!

ifonly4 · 10/03/2020 10:47

Just to say thanks for all your replies. Will see what I can sort out for her later.

Use a Dove soap bar. And dry hands very well after washing. I would also make a habit of applying a moisturizing handcream or just vaseline after each hand wash.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 10/03/2020 10:55

I was also about to recommend dettol sensitive.

Glitterb · 10/03/2020 10:56

I have exactly the same problem as your DD and I find I react to pretty much all hand soaps and hand cream (except Aveeno)
I would try to find a hand wash with no parabens or SLS included and always carry Aveeno with her, Dermol 500 is good as well as you can use it as soap

BiarritzCrackers · 10/03/2020 11:04

Agreed about Aveeno - the best hand cream.

PickAChew · 10/03/2020 11:41

Dove isn't soap.
