If you formula feed/fed what did you do when going out for the day?

DS is combo fed but now mainly formula. We use a thickened formula due to reflux, so he doesn't get on with ready made (Unless there's some way to thicken it on the fly!).

So far if I've gone out, it's been handily between feeds or I have done a quick breast feed. But just thinking, if I couldn't do that, how would I go about making formula out and about?

I was thinking to get those tommee tippee steriliser bags so I can take a clean bottle out with me - is there any way to keep the water at temp so I could take water and formula separately and mix it when im out?
I use a perfect prep currently and was wondering about keeping the water in a thermos then putting the pre-measured formula powder into a clean container?

But just wondered how everyone else does it?

I just made up bottles with freshly boiled water which would have cooled down enough to drink by the time its needed.

babyowlie · 10/03/2020 08:01

With DD I took a hot water flask and made up like that. If a feed was due within two hours I made it a home and took it with me

Water needs to be 70 degrees so I found boiling and adding to flask gave me that temp by the time I came to make it

babyowlie · 10/03/2020 08:03

I also used some of the tommee tippee milk pots so I had the correct amount with me

MyFartWillGoOn · 10/03/2020 08:06

Like pp I make it up with boiling water and by the time DS needs it, it's cooled. Or I've sat in a restaurant and asked for boiling water and an ice bucket before to make it up and cool down. I've never been made to feel an inconvenience for this.

DS is in anti reflux formula so it thickens in 7 minutes / I don't add anything to it.

I also wouldn't get too hung up on steriliser bags. Once a bottle is sterilised, shut it up and the insides are good for 24 hours 👍🏻

Thank you! So do you think bypass the perfect prep for feeds to take out and boil the water instead?

Any recommendations for good flasks for this?

Yes, I'd either take boiling water or make up a bottle with boiling water and let it cool as you're out.

Tommee Tippee used to do a flask for this purpose. It had 2 uses,

  1. To store the boiling water so as long as you fed within a certain time it would be the safe temperature for formula.
  2. It had an oversized lid which doubled up as a bottle warmer/cooler if you used the hot water or iced water and stood the bottle in it.
UpsyDaisysarmpit · 10/03/2020 08:22

PS. I am sure they probably still sell this, just I have a 10 year old and a teenager so I am not really current with what's available nowadays Smile

Minai · 10/03/2020 09:09

I used 2 flasks, one for cooled boiled water, one thermos type one for just boiled water . Bring out clean bottles, a pot for formula. We had tommee Tippee bottles where the pots could sit inside the bottles. To make up a bottle pour in about a third boiling water, add the formula, shake then top up with cooled boiled water.

SeaToSki · 10/03/2020 09:15

I made up bottles at home as usual and put in the fridge. When we went out I had a cooler bag with the bottles in it. Then when it was time for a feed, I would get a large take away cup of hot water (tea with no tea iyswim) and put the bottle in to warm it up a little - but you have to tip some of the water out first or it will all spill over the edge when you put the bottle in. I also eased my dc into liking cooler formula so I didnt need to heat it up as much. I think you can also get warming wraps that you can activate and put around the bottle to heat it up.

We used the tt flask for going out. But we always made bottles at home the old fashioned way (by hand) in advance. We left them to cool then stores them in the fridge. No messing about making them up when needed which seems long winded to me. It's so much easier as they are always ready to go

LER83 · 13/03/2020 11:26

Used to take a flask of boiling water out, the tommee tippee flask was really good, then made up a bottle when needed and cooled it under a tap etc. As they got older I would make bottles up at home before we went and put one of those insulated sleeve things over them to keep them warm. I've found nowadays most child friendly places have microwaves/kettle/will provide hot water.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 13/03/2020 11:32

I used to just make up the bottles as normal but always so we were one in front and then cool them and keep them in the fridge until needed. When I went out I'd just put one of the pre-made bottles in a cool bag and take it with me. Dc would both take their milk cool/cold so I never bothered warming it up. If I was going out for the day I'd take some sterilised bottles and some of that uht formula that comes in cartons and give them that.

20viona · 13/03/2020 11:39

I found this really difficult at first but now I'm more relaxed with it. If it's gonna be drank within an hour or so then I just use my prep machine and make it before I go. If not then I do cool boiled water in the morning and take powder and a flask with me to make it up as I need it. It's a pain in the arse and it's heavy with the flask too.

Itstheprinciple · 13/03/2020 14:59

I did what PPs did and took out pre made and cooled bottles with me in a cool bag and heated up with warm water which I asked for in cafes etc. Or I did use ready made cartons sometimes which DD would take just at room temp if I was somewhere I didn't think I'd be able to get hot water. I just shoved a clean, sterilised bottle in the bag with the lid tightly on.

Daisychainsandglitter · 13/03/2020 18:44

Both my DD's had CMPA so was unable to use ready made formula. As PP have said I used to take a sterilised empty bottle, a powder pot with the powder measured out and a tommee tippee flask.

Wineislifex · 13/03/2020 18:46

I just bought the premixed bottles of aptimel for when out and about

happytoday73 · 13/03/2020 18:48

Premixed apitmel... Not cheap but worth it to not faff

Lllot5 · 13/03/2020 18:52

God I’m so out of the loop with this stuff. I used to make 6 up all at once and put them in the fridge once cooled. Just take one or two and heat them up.
My youngest is 30 though.

MrsCl19 · 13/03/2020 18:52

I did the boiled water in my bottles and put them into a insulated pouch then just added the powder when she wanted a bottle.... Iknow this isn't exactly the recommended way but it worked for us and never had a problem.
