Is there such a product as a phone screen shield to stop the light bothering DH when I’m on it at night?

I’m looking for something such as what surrounds the keypad at an ATM. Something I can click onto my phone at night when I’m in bed (Ive suffered from insomnia since my eldest was born) that would block the light out as much as possible. Does such a thing exist? I’ve tried googling but nothing comes up.

Have you an iPhone? You can lower the screen brightness. Go to the widget page and lower the tab with the sun on it. Makes it brighter and darker.

Put it on night shift and lower the brightness if it’s an iPhone you’ve got

Being on the phone isn’t going to help your insomnia...

On my Samsung if you flick the top of the screen down you can select Blue Light Filter- I have this on all the time. Also, turn down the brightness?

BlankTimes · 09/03/2020 00:47

I feel sorry for your DH, that would drive me crackers.

Google what blue light does to your brain, here's just one example
"Smartphones—like laptops, tablets, and televisions—emit something called blue light, which is a type of light that the brain interprets as daylight. The blue light actually suppresses melatonin (a hormone that affects circadian rhythm and should increase when you are preparing for bedtime). The result: Your brain feels stimulated. This is fine if you’re looking at your smartphone’s screen at noon, but if you’re looking at the screen at midnight, your brain is going to get confused and think that the sun is out—making it even tougher to fall asleep."

Obviously it will take a while to get out of the habit of having a smartphone in bed and to reset your sleep patterns, so if you lie awake, get some headphones and listen to podcasts or TED talks or the radio, just make sure you can't see the screen at all. Pre-set all audio-only things well before you go to bed so all you need to do is switch it on and off.

Buy him an eye mask?

Weenurse · 09/03/2020 01:05

I was going to suggest eye mask as well.
Having electronics next to bed does not aid sleep, try leaving it in another room.

I use an app called bluelight filter. You can choose the colour of the filter and the opacity levels. It's really handy and I use it a lot as the blue light from screens gives me a headache. I use it on my tablet as well, it is really useful for kindle reading.

Loopyloopy · 09/03/2020 01:09

The first thing a person with insomnia should do is remove all screens from the bedroom, and stop using screens in the hour before bed. Blue light filters and turning the brightness down don't usually change the effects the screens have on the brain.

Shoxfordian · 09/03/2020 07:25

Go sit in another room to go on your phone and don't be inconsiderate

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 09/03/2020 07:30

If I was your DH that'd drive me mad. Screens at night are a really bad idea as others have said.

Get up and go to another room and read a book.

This ^^

When I can't sleep I read my kindle (Paperwhite) as it emits much less blue light than a tablet or a phone.
