Severe tonsillitis without a sore throat!?!?!?!

Ds has had a large number of episodes of vomiting in the middle of the night since Xmas.

Been to the doctor who did a load of tests and couldn’t find anything.

Another episode early this morning so (as advised by the GP if it came back) we took him to the emergency GP who admitted him to hospital.

They discovered his lymph nodes were really swollen and eventually discovered that his tonsils are awful. Apparently massively swollen with pus just pouring out of them. Envy (Not envy!) We’ve been prescribed a massive amount of penicillin and it is felt that this is what has caused all the problems as basically every night pus pours out of the manky tonsils into his tummy which makes him sick.

But the weird thing is that not once has he said his throat hurts. Even now when we’ve been asking him. And he is not the “stoic” type - if he he was in pain we’d have heard all about it.

Is that normal? Are the manky tonsils so manky that he just can’t feel them any more?

(And for the sporners out there - no he won’t let me look!)

Oh gosh that sounds horrible!
I suffered with tonsillitis my whole life and the sore throat was always horrific, sorry that’s not more helpful!
My son used to be sick ALL the time especially at night, he was eventually diagnosed with ‘stomach migraines’!
(Again sorry I’m not more helpful!)
Your poor little one, hope you guys get some answers soon, sounds awful :( x

Yes - I had tonsillitis a bit as a child and it always came with a sore throat.

The good news is - no sick in the night and (apart from hating the penicillin and being very vocal about it!) ds seems pretty happy.

Urgh. Maybe you're right, they are so damaged he can't even feel them. My memories of tonsillitis is that it was always sore, but that was a long time ago, they were whipped out when I was 8.

How old is he? It’s not uncommon for children not to report a sore throat with tonsillitis.

I’ve had 4 lots of tonsillitis recently ( having never having had it before!). For two of them I didn’t have a sore throat either - it just felt a bit blocked if that makes sense. I did feel really unwell and have a temperature but wouldn’t particularly have mentioned my throat either.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 09/03/2020 09:35

Someone I used to work with had the same problem, but they did have a sore throat.
I've had several bouts of tonsillitis and I found that ibuprofen absolutely zapped the pain. To the point the first time I had it I didn't realise it was that bad until my throat was almost totally blocked. I went to my gp, she looked in my mouth and said "Oh my goodness!"

thenightfury · 09/03/2020 09:53

I had this as a child. No sore throat just had headaches and sickness for weeks, DM took me to gp who said tonsillitis. Had it a few times after that and never presented with a sore throat

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 10/03/2020 20:09

Ooh - this is fascinating - so some of you have had tonsillitis but no sore throat. And the sickness thing is not uncommon. That’s reassuring.

Ds is 6.

He’s doing pretty well - although the antibiotics are getting us both down as he hates them. 9 doses down and 31 to go - it is going to be a long 10 days....

I really hope this is the solution to his sickness - living with a permanent bucket by your bed is no fun for anyone let alone a little boy.

We ended up in A&E two weeks ago with 8year old DS, had a temp of 41 and we couldn't get it down. He was delirious, shaking, very unwell.

It was his bloody tonsils, they were a state but they didn't hurt???

How bizarre that you had the same!

10 days of AB's later he's grand.

Last time I had it it was sore but not agony. Eventually it was too painful to eat but ok the rest of the time so I went to out of hours.
