Is anyone happy within their job and not bothered about promotion/career advancement?

Just that really. Chatting with my DS and BIL and he seems to think that if people dont want to advance in their career they are either lazy or they are not good at their jobs, but I have worked with brilliant carers/support workers who are not that bothered about advancing, although this might be because the stress that comes with moving up isnt justified by the extra few pence an hour.

I'm a supervisor, the only promotion from this would be manager. Really don't want that job as it would mean our beloved boss would've left. Also it would mean more paperwork and courses and less time in the kitchen and customer interaction,no thanks.

I really like my job, the only career pathway is to step away from doing my job and into managing people who do it instead...

I stepped down from a role I was overwhelmed by and I'm now quite happy in a job I'm really good at. I think there's nothing wrong with wanting to do a good job, have a good amount of time at home and not want to spend more time and energy on paid employment. I hate this idea that working every hour is virtuous. I don't want to be busy every hour.
I think its easy to get trapped, you earn a certain amount and you build a lifestyle dependent upon that and so you have to keep working and chasing the next thing.
My favourite job was working in a busy department store. I'd get to chat all day, it was dead easy, nothing I did was life changing, no pressure. Somehow I was convinced I needed to use my brain and go to university and train for a career..

In many, many jobs, taking the 'next step up', or the next promotion, means you have to stop doing the job you are doing, and might enjoy doing.
I'm in that position. I've had lots of promotions over my career, but, quite frankly I am now enjoying the job I am dong, and the only place I could go would take me into a load of 'strategic level' meetings with a load of twaddle being talked day in and day out, and no time to actually do anything that really has an impact for the people we work with.

Totally depends on the career or job of course. Plus depends on your age and your financial situation and your family and caring situations. Also your own mental health, and if you put all your energies into your job or if you have other interesting and challenging things you do outside of work.
