Job snobs

I’m really starting to get sick of people saying things to me such as “aw how’s the call centre”, “is it just a temporary thing?” “you’ll have a career one day”.
I work in a sales role for an energy supplier. I earn 20k basic a year but also receive weekly commission so overall my salary is more like 23-25k depending on how hard I graft.
I work fairly long hours, constantly subject to target, help some really vulnerable people and love chatting to people.
There’s definitely some sort of shame placed on people working in call centres as if it isn’t a “proper job” but I don’t understand why.
I don’t think the money is bad, I know primary school teachers and nhs workers who are on similar salaries as me yet they are seen as having a real career.
So then I thought it bows down to maybe if your role holds responsibility and is seen as helping society. I think it’s great that people can help the world and teach our children, but I also think it’s fine if you just want to work to earn money.
Does anybody else receive comments like this, or are you someone who thinks of call centre staff as not having proper jobs?

Job (and general snobbery) makes me laugh! I’m a full time post grad student and the looks on some people’s faces is amazing. I do tend to amend what I do for the audience so if it’s people who are clearly looking down on me already I just say I’m a student!

Some people ask me when I am going to get a ‘proper job’..... I don’t even bother to tell them that I used to be very senior in a public service! They are welcome to think what they want!

I have similar from other mums at swimming lessons - they look down their noses at me for no apparent reason - I’ve wondered if it’s because I’m older but 🤷‍♀️

I feel sorry for people who feel that they have to look down or compete with other people in terms of job status because they must feel really insecure and unhappy with their own lives in order to feel the need to do it.

Wtf does not liking cold callers have to do with this thread?

Because lots of us have a vulnerable elderly relative who was pressured into buying something by someone cold calling and/or have had endless calls about an imaginary accident we were in. That isn't the OP by the sound of things, but surely it's not that hard to imagine why 'not liking cold callers', or having a deeply negative experience of them is relevant to a thread where someone says people look down on her job?

I worked in a bank for years, and returning part time wasn't an option then (years ago!) I got a job at a local very expensive holiday resort as a cleaner, fitted in with the kids, lots of benefits like VERY cheap holidays, good pay etc. When I told my old boss what I was doing, he said "oh dear what a shame!"
Later I had a civil service job, left that and now work in a shop. There's a lot of us there with degrees and high management positions previously and I don't give a shiny shit what people think.

Mine is mostly inbound but I also do outbound calls, only ones to say "your car is due for service/MOT/brake pads are low" and they can book if they want or call back. I get commission for just doing my job so I don't pressure people at all

Are you from the company who keep ringing me, week after week, telling me that my car is due for an MOT and won't believe me that the rule about an MOT when the car turns 3 does not cover the whole of the UK, and actually it is 4 years where I live? GrinWink I had no idea they would be on commission but suddenly it makes a lot more sense.

Oh I hate job snobs.

I was speaking to one of my cousins recently (admittedly a very high flyer in the city who retired at 40) and he said in derisory tones about another of our cousins: "he's driving a bus now. He's a bus driver." I was totally perplexed and said so?

ClientQueen · 10/03/2020 19:10

@isabellerossignol definitely not! Ours comes from the DVLA so it's usually pretty accurate at updating. We can't choose who we ring though, it dials automatically
We won't ever win though, people don't like us ringing with reminders but if we don't, we get told off for not reminding them when they're driving with no MOT Grin

Oh, a reminder is definitely good. I was just teasing, really, as I never could understand why they kept ringing, but if they are on commission it makes more sense. Smile Although I'm still not booking an MOT Grin

ClientQueen · 10/03/2020 19:25

@isabellerossignol Grin only get commission if you book! I did 240 calls today so I'm having a rest now Shock
