If you'd fractured your big toe..

Would be be all swollen and bruised or not?
DS2 had a clash with another lad at his Special Needs Rugby session this morning. ..they ran into each other.
His big toe joint now looks slightly swollen and he's walking but taking the weight on his heel, but it hasnt gone black and blue or anything.

He has ASD and the highest pain threshold which is why I wonder if he has actually injured it, because although he is very verbal, he doesn't register pain or illness very well (last time he broke a finger he didn't even notice until I pointed out it was blue and bent!)

I will take him to minor injuries after dinner (it's cooking now and I know there will be a long wait there so we might as well eat first!) but wondered if anyone has broken their big toe and if so was it obvious?

Mine was agony! Toe looked okay but went black under the nail after a few days. Saw a doc in France who said it was broken in two places and strapped it up. Still hurts sometimes even now...years later....

I did mine some years ago. Proper bruising didn't appear until the day after but on the day I did it, it looked fine, just very swollen and extremely sore.

General rule of thumb toe is big ones need looking at, small ones tend to sort themselves out. I got crutches and a very fetching boot.

Good luck!

I broke my big toe as a child. It was very painful and I had to walk on my heel. The only way I can describe it is, you know how painful it is when you stub your toe? It's that pain, but it doesn't go away for weeks. Nothing was done for mine, in fact I treated it with horse liniment and it got better on its own. It was only some time later it was established it had been broken. (This was in the 60's where you didn't make a fuss about things!)

I have a very high pain threshold and it was very painful when I broke my big toe .

When I broke my big toe it was worse than giving birth.

My DS, who has autism, broke his finger and only noticed when it went black. We get things checked out when we wouldn't normally as the high pain threshold clouds the issue somewhat.

My broken toe story is very similar - I upturned a dressing table mirror and it fell out and broke my right big toe. My mother told me it served me right for messing about with things. Nothing was done about it. It was some time later that mine was discovered to be broken, too. (Also a 60's accident)

It was bloody agony, and still hurts in cold weather.
