I'm going next month so I'm here for the replies!

Are you going to Chernobyl?

There are lots of open spaces and monuments in Kiev so looks like it will be great for walking around if the weather's nice. There are a few free walking tours you can do.

Dietsareus · 12/03/2020 22:16

Hi, yes we’ve got the Chernobyl trip booked for Saturday. Are you going? Flying early tomorrow morning 😊 sorry there weren’t any replies for you to get info too, hope you have a great time.

Check the weather for Chernobyl, you have to wear long pants and long sleeves. We went on a baking hot day in may and I had a jumper and Jeans on. I almost died 😂 also tip your guide and driver a few dollars If you can it's a bloody long day and they are great! I dont have any other tips as I just did the usual visiting the cathedrals etc, also the drive from the airport is a good 45 mins so would recommend a taxi it only cost us £20. Have a great time it's an amazing place!

Dietsareus · 12/03/2020 22:37

Thank you! Weather forecast is about 7 degrees for Saturday so shouldn’t suffer too much in jeans and long sleeves 😊 thanks for the tip about the airport transfer too 😊

Kiev is in shutdown mode.

Assuming you can, mainly walk around Central Kiev; it’s a fairly easy city to navigate, and has lots of interesting buildings.

The metro works on tokens; I think you only use the token when entering, but double check that. It’s very cheap, and station Arsenalna is the deepest in either Europe or the world. There’s also a cosmonaut themed station with pictures of the men and women by the platforms. The signage is all in Ukrainian, but when you know how the letters are pronounced, place names are relatively easy to decipher.

St Andrew’s church is worth a look, and what I think was the monastery, but the name escapes me. The photo tag says Perchersk Lavra.

Pripyat and Chernobyl and astonishing; thought provoking and quite unlike anywhere else you’ll have been. Wear layers; even if it’s chilly, you’ll walk a lot and get quite warm. Walk on tarmac where you can and try not to walk on moss. Try to separate from the group (but keeping them in sight) and just take in the sights and sounds, you’ll never forget it.

I went to Ukraine expecting an amazing time, and it exceeded my expectations.

Fingers crossed for you that everything goes to plan.

Why are you undertaking non essential international travel when there is a global pandemic?

Dietsareus · 15/03/2020 06:27

It was a Christmas gift, bought in October, and there have been no travel guidelines issued to advise against it. I’m here now. And no, Kiev is not in shutdown mode.
Thanks for all your replies

“foreign nationals will be barred from entering the country for two weeks to contain the spread of the illness, officials said at a televised briefing on Friday.“
