Phone battery went from 70% to 0%

JellyTots2009 · 08/03/2020 07:42

Last night I charged my phone to around 70% at 11pm. This would usually last well into the next day and I've never had an issue with it.

I went to bed and went on a few apps, this is all normal for me. Woke up at 7am, check my phone but it's dead, showing the battery and cable sign. Weird I thought as I know the % was high.

Started charging it and when it came on, the last thing I was on was Safari. I didn't fall asleep using the internet because I remember coming off it.

So overnight my phone battery has dropped 70% with no reason why. I've checked my battery life and it says screen time was 0 from just after midnight but I can also see that's when the battery life just drained.

Never happened before, but I'm concerned as I rely heavily on my phone for the alarm to wake me up. I have an important week starting tomorrow and I need to make sure that I am up on time everyday.
Getting up at 7 today was a fluke as I usually wake to my alarm.

Any reason why this could have happened? Never experienced battery doing this and had the phone since Sept 2019. So only 6 months old. Do I have to keep it charging throughout the night?

I've googled but all I get are phones that are draining regular. This is the first time this has happened. Not expecting this at 6 months old

Did you use the proper charger or a cheap one?

TeenPlusTwenties · 08/03/2020 07:51

re waking up.
Buy an alarm clock?

SafetyLightsAreForDudes · 08/03/2020 08:00

The blue bar graph looks like the screen was on (dark blue) for a full hour midnight to 1am, and about 40 minutes 1am to 2am - could you have inadvertently left the screen on?

The other thing to check is the battery health - this shows how much charge the battery actually reaches when it says 100% and will deplete over time but I wouldn't have thought it should be too low after only 6 months.

Next option if it starts to happen regularly is to take it to the Apple store and ask them to run some diagnostics - I did this for one of my kids' phones and they were able to tell whether the issue was the battery or something else.

RedIsWhereItsAt · 08/03/2020 08:15

Mine does this sometimes, it'll suddenly drain way quicker than normally. But other times it drains as expected. I just ry to make sure it's 100% before bed. And I set my radio alarm as a backup.

RedIsWhereItsAt · 08/03/2020 08:16

And looking at the graph, it's drained at the same speed as earlier in the day for you.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 08/03/2020 08:18

We get this. I spent ages getting the phone looked at.

It was the charging cable.
The ones we have (if not the original) last about 1-5 months. As soon as the phone batteries start doing this, it's a sign we need a new cable.

It's a pain in the arse.

And don't be fooled, if you have iPhone don't go to their website and buy a genuine apple one. They are the worst. The reviews are awful.

JellyTots2009 · 08/03/2020 10:02

I am still using the original cable but it can play up at times. I've noticed when using fake cables my phone can say this accessory can not be supported. I know Argos do the Apple charger cable for £19. I had to buy one before for my old phone.
I might see if ASDA have an alarm clock as back up.

Don't buy the apple one from Argos.
It will be worse than useless.

You aren't after a fake one, you're after a company that do decent ones.

Amazon is your friend.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 08/03/2020 10:17

I just looked at the official apple website and they have taken down the reviews and ability to review.

Also, in Argos if you put a bad review they don't publish it. I've put down a bad review before and it was rejected.

mencken · 08/03/2020 10:37

they are designed to fail and not to cope with non-apple chargers, it's all total sucker bait.

phones should be OFF at night and certainly not left on charge, fire hazard. As mentioned there is a brilliant thing called an alarm clock which has a battery that will last years.

JellyTots2009 · 08/03/2020 10:38

Really? I'm sure the one I bought was good but it was a few years ago.
Can any one send a link for a reputable seller on Amazon? I always end up buying crappy ones lol can never tell good from bad.
Thanks for advice

Well my phone was my only alarm clock so can't keep it turned off at night. Also used for people to get in touch for any emergencies

This happened to me a few weeks ago when I had done an update. Something had changed in the mail settings and it was constantly checking and downloading emails. I did the same and had charged it the night before and by the morning it was dead even though I had shut down all my apps. Once I sorted the mail problem out it was back to normal. Has put me off doing any more updates to be honest

iPhone Charger Cable... [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07RSR6YKC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_shar&tag=mumsnetforu03-21e]]

We recently bought these because of the rave reviews and the fact that they offer 36 month guarantees.

So far so good

IWouldLikeToKnow · 08/03/2020 11:15

Buy your Apple charger directly from the Apple store. Then you'll know it's genuine. I recently got one. Cost €25

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 08/03/2020 11:15

Look for Amazon Basics, their cables are Apple approved. here

TwoZeroTwoZero · 08/03/2020 11:27

This is the reason why I try not to rely on one device (my phone) for absolutely everything because when it fucks up it is a massive hassle. Proper alarm clock for waking up, proper radio for music, actual camera for decent and printable photos, real books to read, notebook and pen and a paper diary for notes and dates and an actual sat nav (or even an atlas!) for directions. That way, if my phone breaks or is stolen (like it was a few months ago), it's not a major issue.

Re. the battery thing, have you tried letting it discharge fully and then charging it to 100% a few times? If it keeps happening and it's still under warranty then take it in for repair.

Chemenger · 08/03/2020 11:39

I’ve had the same experience as Emmacb82 with outlook mail draining my battery at an alarming rate.

JellyTots2009 · 08/03/2020 12:51

Don't bite the link doesn't work for me. I think I'll buy from the link below. Thanks
