Can I pay cash on the tube?

Currently outside London. Going home tomorrow & need to get to Gatwick. Was going to get tube to victoria & then bus to Gatwick. Can I pay cash for these? I have sterling cash that I’d like to get rid of before going home.
Also, is this the easiest way to Gatwick from the Highbury area? Thanks.

Buses and tubes are cashless. You will need to buy a ticket or use contact less.

JorisBonson · 07/03/2020 18:39

You can buy a days travelcard with cash at a tube station.

Best way Gatwick - Highbury or vice versa is train to Victoria (just get the plain old Southern train, cheaper than Gatwick Express and only takes a few minutes longer) then the Victoria line to Highbury

GreenWheat · 07/03/2020 18:40

Take the Victoria line from Highbury and Islington to Victoria, then take the Gatwick express train. You can pay cash at the ticket machines for both these tickets.

Alsonification · 07/03/2020 18:46

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I wasn’t clear, we are going Highbury to Gatwick. So I presume victoria from Highbury & then southern train from there?
Can I buy the tickets at any tube station? Thanks.

@GreenWheat great thanks.

I’m fairly sure ticket machines at stations still take cash. Take the bus if you’ve got the time, but there’s a fast train from Victoria if not. I’m not sure if the Gatwick Express is more expensive, but loads of trains to the south coast stop there.

JorisBonson · 07/03/2020 18:49

@Alsonification yes, Victoria line to Victoria then train to Gatwick. The Gatwick Express bus a swizz!

Can pay cash at Highbury tube and again at Victoria.

JorisBonson · 07/03/2020 18:49

*Gatwick Express, I have no idea why bus is in there!

Solasum · 07/03/2020 18:50

You can use aNy contactless card on the tube

foobio · 07/03/2020 18:55

Don't use the Gatwick express, it costs £££ more and only saves you a few minutes!

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 07/03/2020 18:58

The trains from Farringdon go to Gatwick. Bedford to Brighton line. Far far cheaper than the Gatwick Express. Highbury and Islington to Farringdon by tube then cross the platform. Easy.

Alsonification · 07/03/2020 19:02

Thanks so much for all the replies. I appreciate it.
I’d use contactless except I have my son with me so can’t use it for him as he doesn’t have a card plus I want to use up my sterling before I go home.
Thanks again. Very helpful.

How old is your son? If he is with you he won't need to pay on the Tube if he is under 11. You just need to go to the staffed hate at the entrance and exit so they can let you through together.

Chienloup · 07/03/2020 19:28

*gate, not hate!

Chienloup · 07/03/2020 19:32

For the Southern train you'll need to buy a train ticket at Victoria (there are lots of machines), but there is now contactless at Gatwick, so if your son is under 5 you could use that at the gate. The trains to Gatwick from the very far platforms with the highest numbers (around platforms 14-18).

Alsonification · 07/03/2020 19:41

My son is 17 so not free Angry

Does he not have a card he can use to tap in and do contactless?

Racheyg · 07/03/2020 20:13

Get the Victoria line from Highbury to kings cross, walk to st Pancras and jump on the train to Gatwick.

I have no idea about the tube though as I always use my oyster but I'm guessing you can buy at the tube station

You can get a single ticket from st Pancras to Gatwick.

GrumpyHoonMain · 07/03/2020 20:18

You tap in with your card then give it to him across the barrier and let him tap himself in.

ecuse · 07/03/2020 20:50

Pretty sure you can't tap the same card twice, GrumpyHoonMain (because of fare capping)

Alsonification · 08/03/2020 14:50

Ladies thanks so much for all the help. In the end we got the tube from Arsenal station (as we had been at the Emirates stadium for a tour) to kings cross & then on to victoria. From there we got the train to Gatwick. All very easy to negotiate & I used up all my sterling. Smile
