Work experience - recording studio

Hello everyone. Does anyone know how I'd go about finding music companies around London & South East that would be willing to take a student on work exp? DS is a very accomplished musician who's also an IT boffin, so music technology experience would be fantastic. Thank you all.

'Music technology experience would be fantastic' and his skill set so far, suggests recording studios.
'Recording studio' covers every thing from the likes of Air's Lyndhurst Hall and the BBC to places where 'Big Louis' metal detects visitors and holds the 'hardware' for mutual protection during sessions (while often excellent production work takes place) as well as large numbers of really good studios based in (often semi/retired from the road) musician and crews homes, where everyone stays for a week to months, to work.

One easy enough option is look at community based studios that do free or reduced sessions with under 25's, who ought to be happy to give him the opportunity to do some free studio work experience. There's lots around London. Some music equipment hire companies also run rehearsal/recording rooms.

He might like to check out whats going on downstairs at Nando’s in Frith Street, Soho, can buy food and watch proceedings.
Possibly chat up the engineer - you never know where a conversation can get you. (They're running with Neumann U87 mic and Waves Platinum Bundle on iMac if that's of use to him to know)

Totally understand the desire to look for things for him (and yes I'd be doing similar) but the purpose of work experience and placements is to gain experience, so He should do the further research rather than you, and match himself to the environments he's pitching to. Smile

You are so right AlltheRs that he should be doing the research himself, but truly he's so consumed by GCSEs and different band/orchestra commitments at the moment, that I just want to take a little bit of the pressure off while I can. Otherwise he won't be able to start giving this his attention when all the placements have gone.

I will look into everything you have mentioned with attention, some of it sounds like a foreign language to me.

I so thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful response, thank you!

Speaking as someone who used to work in a building (not music industry) where people would frequently ask for work experience:

The absolute worst type of enquiry is when parents ask for work experience on behalf of their children. It's a really, really bad look. I'd turn anyone like that down straight away. No way would I want to work with anyone who couldn't make a basic phone call and didn't even remotely show any communication skills.

Yes you're right tectonicplates
