What skills have you learnt from scratch as an adult?

I've realised that I don't really have many skills that I learnt as a child so I've decided to start trying to acquire some as an adult.

My initial goals are to learn a foreign language and learn how to play the guitar.

Anyone learnt any skills from scratch as an adult and if so, what are they?

Learn to cook using fresh ingredients.

As a kid my mum would only serve up fish fingers, chips and peas etc. I had never seen her use herbs.

Soap making. Just melt and pour currently but I'm learning about cold process too. I'm just not keen on having lye in the house.

Computers.

I was born in the late 60s, so I’m one of the last generation who didn’t grow up with computers & IT, and who had to learn to use them from scratch in adult life. I now use Excel & other applications every day, but it has been an continues to be a struggle.

How to use a computer and the internet like a ninja. How to drive. How to think outside of the box to get stuff done/fixed. Basic engine, heating, plumbing and electrical maintenance. How to knit and crochet and write my own patterns. How to fundraise and beg for funds semi successfully. How to entertain people. How to do my current job. The only skills from childhood to benefit me today are - basic maths, English language, and musical skills. I have two degrees and use nothing from either of them.....

PhD from univ of youtube here in decorating. I used to be an interiors editor and when you're that fussy you need to be able to DIY with help from the builders' merchant and his brother Grin

Sewing and making clothes, ditto. That shit in magazines about the extra half an inch is true, annoyingly.

Childhood skill is reading, always.

DIY on a need-to-know basis from YouTube.
Typing from a library book.
Piano from sitting in and following DCs’ progress.
Methodical patchwork, rather than just throwing things together, from books and YouTube.
Driving (obv).

Swimming this year. Enough of the “mummy breast stroke”, now I can plough through the water with my coordinated breathing!

Next year I’m planning to learn the clarinet (private lessons) and improve my simultaneous translation skills.

Crochet & knitting. Making clothes. Stained glass. Mosaic. Quilting. I love learning new things!

My DP has learnt to play an instrument from scratch.
