Do you live in Edinburgh? Is it business as usual at the moment?

This is emphatically not another bloody C-Virus thread, so don't worry!

We are due to travel to Edinburgh a week today. We have no plans to cancel, unless travel becomes restricted. I am just curious, is the city quieter with everything that is going on at the moment, or just 'business as usual'? We live near Manchester and it is definitely noticeably quieter at the moment. The trains/trams are less crowded, bars that are usually bustling are (whilst still busy) definitely not as busy. I am only asking out of curiosity. Thanks Smile

I work in the city centre. Absolutely business as usual in my experience.

weebarra · 06/03/2020 13:47

I work in the centre and commute to the suburbs. Absolutely normal!

Good to know! Thank you Smile

Same here, live out of the centre but work in, exactly as normal.

Watchagotcha · 06/03/2020 20:19

Just spent 10 days here, back visiting family. It all seems pretty normal to me for this time of year ie. not too many tourists and flipping roadworks everywhere ;-)

CormoranStrike · 06/03/2020 20:49

I love just outside Edinburgh and went to the cinema tonight and it was very quiet.

I work in the city centre and my firm has just announced restrictions on travel between sites, closing receptions etc.

awaynboilyurheid · 06/03/2020 20:54

I was there last weekend Totally business as usual , quiet tourist season at this time of year than in the better weather and it was dreich weather ( dark and raining) Lots of roadworks as whatcha said but absoloutely no different from this time last year.

I dropped DD at Waverley today, looked much like normal.
Royal Mile still had tourists.
There's still cleaning products, toilet roll, bread and so on in the supermarkets.
Roadworks as usual , Leith Walk getting dug up for trams.

I am resurrecting this thread in the hope of picking the brains of some of you locals!!

We want to go to South Queensferry to have a look around and also see the bridges. Could I ask - what is the best way to get there from Waverley? I can't tell, from maps, how far the train station at Dalmeny is from the town of Queensferry itself, and Mr Thyme has a bad leg at the minute so may not be up to long distance walking! Is there a bus?

Thank you in advance Grin

Train station is up and down a big hill. There are buses to SQF. Look at stagecoach. I m not sure if Lothian Buses go to the Ferry but worth a look.

EchidnasPhone · 11/03/2020 13:30

Definitely bus. It is quite a steep walk. If you’re a tourist you can do the bus tour which includes a boat trip as well..

Thymelord · 11/03/2020 13:33

Excellent, thank you both for that!

You could get the 43 bus from St Andrews Square (500m from Waverley) to South Queensferry. It stops at the far end of the village (near the junction of The Loan / Newhalls Road (main street in SQ). The Rail Bridge is probably 1km walk from there but it is flat along the seafront. Or you can get the 3 bridges tour bus from outside Waverley Station (no idea of cost or route though).

Thymelord · 11/03/2020 15:23

Thank you Collywibbles that is very helpful. I am writing that down!

I did 3 bridges tour from waverley station two years ago and it was absolutely fabulous. It's £25 each for adults

I had a look at the Three Bridges Tour - looked ace! Sadly, they don't start running until 6 April Sad

Thanks for the links to Lothian Buses - I have downloaded the app! I shall be jumping on those buses like a local (or a bus wanker? Grin)

Buy a day saver and then you can hop on and off as many buses as you like
