Hi,

So the sell by date was for tomorrow, but I did still do the smell test. It didn't smell off, but it did smell strong, but not off, just like turkey. I guess like cooked turkey.

I've smelt off chicken before and it's very distinctive. This wasn't like that.

Anyway, I decided to cook it and eat it first and then Google Confused What a genius I am..

It doesn't sound good, but I'm clinging onto the fact it's thigh meat and perhaps that's stronger??

Are we going to be violently ill soon? Confused

But it didn’t smell off though? It’s probably fine then - cooked all through? You’ll be ok. Fingers crossed 🤞

Emetophobe here, and I think you'll be ok! Packaged fresh turkey often smells rank especially if you just opened the plastic. Not sure if it's some gas they pump inside to keep it fresh or the meat itself or a combination of both.

I've actually stopped buying turkey because I know that even perfectly fine fresh meat will smell farty, and my emetophobia will cause me to throw it out. I've done it countless times already, know it's irrational and a waste but still can't stop myself.

So based on this, pretty sure the mince was fine :)!

@Lordfrontpaw, fingers crossed indeed.

No, it definitely didn't smell off, but everything I'm reading is saying it shouldn't smell of anything at all.

I always find cod smells like - sorry to be gross - bums. Not great but I’ve never poisoned anyone. I haven’t shared my thoughts on raw cod with my fish eating family ...

@PastelRainbows, I did wonder if I have the same phobia actually. I get incredibly anxious and panicky if I think I'm going to be sick.

@Lordfrontpaw, Grin I can't say I have noticed this.

Fresh turkey mince always stinks even on the day of purchase.

I kept smelling a really rank smell from our dishwasher that made me gag when I opened it. It turned out to be a bowl with turkey remnants in it that hadn't been washed from the night before. Not gone off or anything just a very strong smell.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 05/03/2020 18:53

Turkey mince is smellier, but it definitely smells like off chicken when it’s gone; and in my experience, the texture goes odd too. I think you’ll be fine.

Lordfrontpaw · 05/03/2020 19:14

You haven’t smelt smelly until you’ve opened a dishwasher after someone has left a bowl of tuna leftovers in there for three weeks when she went off on holiday. 🤢

TequilaMonster · 05/03/2020 19:19

Oh dear. I just tidied the kitchen and threw the packet away. I think I detected a bit of 'off' this time Confused

Ok sure it would have tasted a bit ‘fermented’ if it had gone off.

I’ve only ever had horrible food poisoning once from something that I didn’t think ‘that tastes a bit unusual’ at the time (egg on a dish so wouldn’t have tasted it anyway).

TequilaMonster · 05/03/2020 19:32

It did have a bit of a strange taste, but I thought it was because I added tarragon and it didn't go.

Lordfrontpaw · 05/03/2020 19:34

I’d have to agree with you there - what were you thinking!?

TequilaMonster · 05/03/2020 19:39

I don't know! I think I was thinking tarragon and chicken- yes...so why not turkey and tarragon, but it turns out, tarragon and turkey- no. Or it could be, tarragon and gone off turkey- NO 🤦‍♀️

Gin will kill off any germs. LadyPeterWimsy is still with us after her nasty chocolate incident last night.

Hmm interesting... just found this.

Alcoholis known to be able tokill bacteria, so one would assume consumption ofalcoholwouldkillboth the harmful and beneficialbacteriain the gut. Research has shown that wine and otheralcohol canhelpkillharmfulbacteriain yourstomachbefore it reaches your intestine, such as Salmonella and norovirus
