Please can anyone with the police or with knowledge of speeding fines/ traffic offences help me?

I have just received a letter saying I committed a road traffic offence. The letter is from the police speeding unit but the letter says my offence was driving without due care and attention. The evidence provided is a series of photos of my car proceeding down the road, no record of speed, no obvious offence I can see.

Previously, when I was caught speeding in another police area, the letter stated my speed. As this letter does not mention my speed, am I to assume I was doing something else wrong? And how do I find out what that was? I have been driving for nearly 40 years and I am not trying to wriggle out of punishment if I have done something wrong, but I would like to know exactly what it was.

Yes they do. I know this because I did a speeding course yesterday and they told us that the police absolutely take evidence from dashcams/camera footage sent in by the public.

I think is actually quite a dangerous path to go down. How would anyone know that the camera-wearing MAMIL is completely without fault at any time? We’ve all seen how aggressive they can be and how they absolutely adhere to the rules of the road. 🙄

I used to be able to issue penalties for fag butts & litter thrown out of car windows, but had to be authorised by my local authority to do so - it was in line with my occupation.

Now anyone with a dash cam can pick & choose who they report?! Some people will properly get off in that.

quite impressed that the camera evidence was accepted, but good news. Fortunately no injury caused.

now the OP, and hopefully everyone else reading this, knows how to overtake a cyclist safely. It might be your partner next time - I know and the impatient bitch concerned got sued, turned out she wasn't actually prepared to stand up in court and lie when it came to it. Doesn't compensate for a lifetime of pain, though.

Yup, there's a locally known vigilante cyclist in my area who rides around purposefully looking for driving offences and hands the footage over to the police. He's quite proud to have hundreds of fines issued from his work.

the video footage has to be a certain format though.
last time I wanted submit footage of a taxi running a red light it wasn't accepted. the video should show 20 sec of footage before and after the offence.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 04/03/2020 00:00

I’d never get to overtake a cyclist if I had to wait until I could cross into the opposite carriageway.

Rainbows8117 · 04/03/2020 00:48

Our local police force you can just submit dashcam footage online. My dad did this once when there was a very dangerous driver speeding and overtaking on narrow country roads. I would presume the video footage would have to be pretty clear so in your situation then I would assume you could see from the cyclist's camera his position on the road and then how close you were when you drove past. Maybe it wasn't the distance as you passed at the side but when you cut back in.

@puppymouse "Don't speed next time." She wasn't!

From the OP Previously, when I was caught speeding in another police area, the letter stated my speed

I stand by my comment, speeding kills

10FrozenFingers · 04/03/2020 11:31

@TheFastandTheCurious

Maybe next time just admit you were wrong instead of trying to justify your lack of comprehension skills.

TheFastandTheCurious · 04/03/2020 11:36

@10FrozenFingers where am I wrong? I never said this offence was speeding, I said she has been caught speeding before as she states in her OP.

puppymouse · 04/03/2020 12:57

@TheFastandTheCurious I see what you meant but it wasn't relevant or helpful to chastise the OP for a previous driving offence.

Guttersnipe · 04/03/2020 13:51

Not trying to justify it, but my ancient speeding fine was for going 1 mph above the allowed margin for error. I was not doing 50 down a residential street. I was actually following the traffic in an unknown area, so I presume that every car that day was caught for speeding.

So I've held my hands up to that crime and it was years ago. Insisting on admonishing me for speeding when I havent been speeding for years is really annoying of you. It is like me admonishing you for wetting your pants when you were potty training.

It's only in the Bible it says "let he who is without sin cast the first stone". English law - rightly or wrongly - doesn't give a toss.
