My DD borrowed one of the Dog Man ones out of the library recently it’s like a comic and she was giggling away reading it and kept telling me the funny bits in it, so I read it after her and it was quite funny. It appealed to my admittedly childish sense of humour Grin. We are going to borrow all the other ones now.

I liked The voyage of arctic tern.
And of course Anne of Green Gables et al.

RuffleCrow · 03/03/2020 12:58

My asd 6 year old has got into Diary of a Wimpy Kid (i know he's a bit young but a book is a book) and it regularly has us in stitches. Especially anything to do with little brother Manny (ds is also the youngest).

I love children’s books. Biggest pleasure of being a parent has been reading books to them. And discovering new ones - I’m stuck in Percy Jackson at the moment.

Fifthtimelucky · 03/03/2020 13:26

Oh masses. Many of them are ones I read as a child and enjoyed re-reading as an adult eg classics like Wind in the Willows, the Pooh books, Just So Stories, Heidi, What Katy Did, Anne of Green Gables, the Narnia books, Ballet Shoes and others by Noel Streatfield, books by E Nesbit and Frances Hodgson Burnett etc

Others I have read and enjoyed for the first time as an adult. The ones I have enjoyed most are Harry Potter and load of books by Michael Morpurgo, Eva Ibbotson and Malorie Blackman.

megletthesecond · 03/03/2020 13:29

When they were little I liked the Mick Inkpen books.
At primary age the "Daisy and the trouble with...." and the Tom Gates books were fun.

NannyR · 03/03/2020 13:34

Loads - my go-to books when I need something easy to read and not too brain taxing are "ballet shoes" by Noel streatfield and "a little princess" by Frances hodgson Burnett. I'm also re reading "when Hitler stole pink rabbit" at the moment. I always check out the kids books in charity shops to see if there are any favourites from my childhood.

Stickman! Love it. And the tiger who came for tea.

Witchend · 03/03/2020 14:35

I read more children's books than adults.
Authors I can recommend:
Malcolm Saville,
Monica Edwards,
Geoffrey Trease
Diana Wynne Jones
Gwendoline Courtney
Antonia Forest
Violet Needham
Noel Streatfield
Elizabeth Goudge
Arthur Ransome,
I could continue...

H1978 · 03/03/2020 16:37

I love the enchanted forest books by Enid Blyton and bought myself the whole set from the summer fayre at dd’s school Grin

Ormally · 03/03/2020 16:40

The Humphrey series, by Betty G. Birney. I am as pleased to get one we have not read as my DD is! The first one is probably my favourite.

lazylinguist · 03/03/2020 16:46

Loads. Harry Potter, The Dark Is Rising series by Susan Cooper. Percy Jackson, lots of stuff by Diana Wynne Jones. A story is a story and good characters are good characters, whether they are written for adults or children.

Some people seem to think that adults who like children's books are too dim or childish to read adult books. I've read plenty of highbrow literature (in several languages ) but I still like children's books.

vampirethriller · 03/03/2020 17:48

Agent Z and the Penguin from Mars
The Runaways
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase
All the Jill and Jinny pony books
Follyfoot
Not sure if Adrian Mole counts but they're my favourites.

TheMemoryLingers · 03/03/2020 17:52

Yes, I often read them - but they're all books I first read as a child. I have tried the odd later-published book by a childhood favourite author, but couldn't get into them.

HappyHoppyHippo · 03/03/2020 17:53

Skullduggery pleasent books, definitely worth a read.

Notmorenurofen · 03/03/2020 17:54

Charlotte’s Web
National Velvet
The Sheep Pig
and lots of others too

HoHoHolyCow · 03/03/2020 17:55

I'm reading the Once series by Morris Gleitzman with DS1. We're both really enjoying them!

EssentialHummus · 03/03/2020 17:56

I only have a toddler, but will happily read Five Minutes Peace again and again. The content speaks to me.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 03/03/2020 17:58

The Scarecrows Wedding and The Highway Rat.

I love anything with a dastardly baddie.

Wineinbathtub · 03/03/2020 17:59

Hubert Horatio Bartle Bobton Trent by Lauren Child is a really fun story with great illustrations. I love reading it to my 4 year old!

Minutewaltz · 03/03/2020 18:01

The Little Princess and the Secret Garden.
The Secret Garden fascinates me - did Frances Hodgson Burnett Base it on a true story? I mean, was there a boy called Colin who lived in a big house and thought he was going to die?

devildeepbluesea · 03/03/2020 18:02

Lots which have already been mentioned: Harry Potter, Philip Pullman books, Eva Ibbotson, Diana Wynne Jones...

The other day I ordered Marmalade Atkins's Dreadful Deeds, and laughed like a drain all the way through!
