and instead of being 100% happy I am filled with anxiety and worry that I wont be able to do it. My friend has just said think like a man they would never not think they could do it and it has struck a chord. It will be a lot more pressure but I think I can step up to it. Argghhhh freaking out a bit now so as I cant say anything as I am at work I am posting here!

You wouldn't have got it if they didn't think you could do it! Impostor syndrome is really common and you'll probably feel anxious at first but it will pass once you realise you can do it. Congrats!

AdoraBell · 03/03/2020 12:32

Congrats 🥳 you will be fine after a couple of weeks.

ReginaGeorgeous · 03/03/2020 12:35

Congrats! You’ll be fine, if they didn’t think you could do it, you wouldn’t have got the job.

Mumdiva99 · 03/03/2020 12:36

Congratulations. Enjoy the new challenge.

thanks very much - I am just genuinely so shocked! Definitely an imposter syndrome sufferer.

congrats. I got promoted in Jan - I became the boss! (small organisation). It HAS been more stressful since - hopefully your promotion came with a pay rise. I've been thinking a lot " I am definitely earning this payrise"

I felt a need to "prove myself" while simultaneously knowing that really people aren't watching and scrutinising as much as I think they are...

I did do a bit of a "first few weeks in office" plan for myself though. A bit like the press focus on the first moves of new politicians and then after a bit no-one pays quite so much attention. So I had a few priorities - sort out a festering conflict, meet 1 to 1 with all my key reports, ask questions about the key capacity issues. Plan well the first meeting where I was in the boss role. I made sure that I was proactive about those as my starting to do list. It helped me feel like I was doing something active about the "prove yourself" feeling.

Also if you've been promoted in an organisation you already work in, I guess you know how the "system " works. So I thought about what I'd wanted and needed from the boss before. Things like an attitude of being responsive to emails.

But interesting times... suddenly issues from parts of the organisation that I wasn't involved with before, are now my business. Things I didn't see coming my way!

Good luck!

Thanks chilled that is a really helpful post and I am definitely going to try and take the same approach. It is internal but a different department - eeekkkkk I am going to be the boss too! Second time line managing so not a total newbie but...

good luck, don't let those internal voices tell you you can't do it. It can be fun too. Now finally you can insist on things you care about getting done because .... you're the boss!
