Been prescribed Mirtazapine when I'm already grossly overweight. Any experiences?

I've been on citalopram and sertraline previously.

I went today as everything is just so much worse.

I was prescribed this.

I'm 5ft5 and 17 stone :(

He said it may increase my appetite. I said I was already really depressed about my weight. He just sort of moved onto the next thing.

Got home and read this...(pic)

I don't know what to do

Should I take it?

Mirtazapine made me less anxious, improved my depression and, although made me a bit zombie like, helped me to feel more like myself after I got used to it.

I’d lost weight in the depths of depression, but Mirtazapine made me very hungry and I put it back on and more. I’d go back and discuss a different med.

I was prescribed this for anxiety...it helped with that but I was ravenous.

Has anyone found weight gain with Amytriptiline? It helps with my sleep. Are all sleep inducing ones, ones that make you gain weight? Does anyone know?

johnwayneisbigleggy · 03/03/2020 14:33

Be warned with duloxetine - I'm on it and the side effects are not nice, and the withdrawal effects are awful - dizziness, sickness, brain fog.

Blackredblack · 03/03/2020 16:06

@CatMuffin Amitriptyline was the very first antidepressant I was put on. I gained a huge amount of weight but I was also on the maximum dose, I think around 150mg.

I was a lot hungrier on them so I knew early on I would gain weight.

Blackredblack · 03/03/2020 16:12

It’s mostly tricyclic antidepressants that cause weight gain. Out of the newer ones, the one least likely to lead to weight gain is duloxetine but as I said up thread it a nightmare to come off or even reduce the dose for a lot of people.

QuentinWinters · 03/03/2020 16:17

I read mirtazapine actually affects some peoples basal metabolic rate so its not even necessarily possible to control weight gain with diet. I put on 3 stone on it, even though I ate carefully and took up running, all the weight came off easily when I stopped.

Tough one OP, I sympathise. Without meaning to sound patronising, have you tried other things like mindfulness, exercise , etc?

CatMuffin · 03/03/2020 16:43

Thanks Blackredblack

Sorry, I wasn’t trying to say you should be fat and happy, I was just saying that the alternative was worse for me. I don’t plan on being on if forever, I have 3 stone to lose. But it’s helping me right now and I’m not sure I’d be here without it. I hope you find something that works for you Flowers

dottycat123 · 03/03/2020 17:35

I work in mental health, it's a good antidepressant but we will always prescribe Mirtazapine if someone's appetite is reduced as it makes most people eat more than usual.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/03/2020 17:36

It made me put on weight and hungry, i asked and changed to Fluoxetine instead. It is less sedating and more stimulating though

Orangeblossom78 · 03/03/2020 17:37

Yes as dotty says I heard it is used in anorexia for example
