DD (4) has a really nasty bout of tonsillitis at the minute.
She's been prescribed antibiotics to take.

The first lot she was given were vile and we managed one dose before her throwing up everywhere.

She's now been given big standard amoxicillin, the yellow liquid and getting it into her is a battle.
I've tried to mix it with yoghurt and she knew straight away and refused.
I've tried holding her down and she fights with me, screams and coughs so much she makes herself sick and it comes back out.
I've tried reasoning with her and telling her that if she doesn't take them she'll have to go to hospital and have them through a needle.
Nothing is working.

I'm at my wits end. Her tonsils are so swollen, her temp is through the roof, she won't eat, she'll reluctantly sip liquids but that's about it.

Please has anyone got any advice.

Freeze it by dose in to ice lollies? Mixed with milkshake perhaps.

LewisFan · 02/03/2020 18:54

Syringe to the side of the mouth?

Hidde in banana milkshake (homemade so actual banana flavour and some nourishment while it's hard to eat)?

Flat out bribery with chocolate?

StillDisappointed · 02/03/2020 21:20

I'll have to try to freeze it in doses.

I keep attempting to wrangle her but she screams 'mummy no stop it!' at the top of her lungs before sobbing and I'm concerned my neighbours might ring SS.

I used to do a drop at a time. It took AGES. Once we did a new doses like that he could manage two drops at a time, with jumping around the room in horror.

user246854 · 02/03/2020 22:40

Milkshake medicine! I buy the milkshake straws in strawberry and banana flavour, add the medicine to milk and get Dd to drink through that... it's the only way I can get medicine in her. I keep a supply in first aid box

memememe · 03/03/2020 16:03

use a syringe and put it to the back and side of her tongue. she wont taste it that way. ask her to let you show her the one time. fingers crossed she'll let you

Ormally · 03/03/2020 16:24

Not sure it will work but my DD liked to have the control herself, of doing the syringe. This was a bit more bearable for her than me doing so. Could you also maybe do a deal and get her to feed you thin yoghurt in a syringe in return (with you cooperating reasonably, even though you make out it's disgusting every time and tastes like old socks and bananas or something)? Then reward for both of you.

StillDisappointed · 03/03/2020 17:40

So today I've tried;

Reasoning and bribery
Milkshake
Again, holding her down in a towel
Trying to explain that I know it's yuck but it'll make her better
Asking her to let me squirt it so she can't taste it

She's not having any of it Sad I can't pin her down properly by myself and I'm worried about wasting anymore doses.

She won't even take calpol or nurofen anymore. I don't know what else to do, I'm so concerned she's going to end up in hospital seeing as she won't eat and will only drink little sips.

Have you tried ice lollies? And did you manage to freeze some of the antibiotics?

GreenTulips · 03/03/2020 19:55

Try putting in in a spoon and press it down on their tongue, fairly lightly but it makes you swallow and she won’t taste it

Ozziewozzie · 03/03/2020 20:05

Ice lollies/ice cream first to help numb the throat a little. Will she take calpol and children’s nurofen? If not as her throat is so sore, get an appt tomorrow and ask for suppository paracetamol. I used these for my ds (4) when he had My ds would vomit and choke if any medicine went in his throat.
Don’t worry if she doesn’t eat much. Just give her plenty of ice cold drinks, lollies, ice cream, yoghurts, jelly. It’s so stressful when kids won’t take medicine. I had a whole year of it for one reason and another. I really feel for you both.

Ozziewozzie · 03/03/2020 20:06

Check you can freeze the anti biotics. I wanted to freeze iron supplement liquid and the instructions said not to in capitals. It’s worth checking out.

TooGlamToGiveADamnn · 03/03/2020 20:11

Spoon of medicine. Spoon of brown sugar.
That's how I do it.

littleleeleanne · 03/03/2020 20:13

I don't know if this will help or not but I watched on the programme 'behind GP closed doors' on channel 5 a little girl who wouldn't take medicine like this, very much same story and the Mum took her back to the doctors and the doctor told the little girl what was what and got her to take the medicine.... worth a try if nothing is working? Long shot I know.
We've before in the past given medicine when our kids are asleep Confused not advisable because of choking however it wakes them a little bit and they don't really understand so just swallow it, if you squirt it into their cheek I think it is it rolls down the back so they have less chance of choking.

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 03/03/2020 20:14

Oh god I feel for you, my ds has asd and will not entertain antibiotics at all. We have to hope that his body does its thing and just try to make him as comfortable as possible.

First point of call, get some Difflam Spray, it'll numb the throat and enable her to swallow without pain. You don't need to hit the throat with it just get it in and when she swallows it'll hit the right places. You can get it from boots.

Forget food until she asks for it and concentrate on liquids. Encourage watery food such as melon, jelly, and ice lollys. Maybe try fruit pots and pouches aimed at babies. Anything to get it in.

Good luck and I hope she's on the mend soon.

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 03/03/2020 20:16

Also check if you have the no sugar antibiotics. They are utterly vile, you can ask for the sugar loaded ones to make it more palatable.

Comfortzone · 03/03/2020 20:17

I've had this with my kids

Tell them it's magic fairy potion and each day she takes it then the fairy will leave a coin for her under her pillow

The nurse fairy sent it to you - you found it at the bottom of the garden today

I tried everything believe me!

Comfortzone · 03/03/2020 20:19

I also have a fruit pastille or something in one hand and then the spoonful of med in the other

quickly give sweet to her after she swallows

Oh and have her fav cartoon on at same time

Or while she's playing iPad or phone as distraction

Praise praise and happy noises also necessary

EmmiJay · 03/03/2020 20:20

My DD was a pain to get medicine into when she was two (out of the blue just refused) I only cracked it by swaddling her in a beach towel, my leg over her middle, and slowly syringing the medicine into the back of her mouth and blowing gently her face to make her swallow. I did that twice and then she realised it didn't taste that bad and never fought me over medicine again. In fact she now gets excited if she gets 'doctor medicine' (antibiotics) Lol.

StillDisappointed · 04/03/2020 10:43

I managed to get a dose in her!!!

It took me 40 minutes and lots of bribery, praise, determination and iPad time.
After all that she said, it tastes nice mummy. AngryConfused
I felt like my head was going to explode.

Thank you for all your suggestions.

Haha! Well done. Hopefully that’ll mean she will take the rest without any drama.

EmmiJay · 04/03/2020 11:12

Grin Bless her! Hope she feels better soon

antisupermum · 04/03/2020 11:16

I used to hide it in fromage frais yoghurts. Only thing that worked for mine - they loathed that bloody luminous "banana" medicine.
