Is this a UTI, Kidney Infection, dehydration or something else?

NC for privacy

Approx 2 weeks ago, I woke with pains to my sides where my kidneys are (I guess?) and found my wee burnt. I also noticed the frequency was more with regards to weeing but not necessarily in volume.

Saw my GP who prescribed nitrofurantoin for 3 days. This seemed to have the desired effect.

And today I am back with burny pee, a stingy "area" sore sides and passing urine more frequently but no increase in volume.

Can't get into the GP today but wondered if a UTI (which she suspected) can clear up and come back again so quickly or could it be something else?

Any suggestions on how to soothe in the meantime are appreciated!

Get back to the doctors, I had a kidney stone recently with similar symptoms, I ended up passing out with the pain whilst in hospital with my partner for an appointment of his. The pains came on so quickly, I vomited and then fainted with the pain in the endoscopy waiting room! Never felt pain like it, go to the walk in if you're still in pain

Yes it can, in my non-inconsiderable experience. Can you just drop a sample into the GP for the nurse to check? I find drinking lots really helps. If it gets really unbearable though call 111.

Apparently they have a urine protocol to follow. Last week I got asked all sorts of things, and a message sent to the GP before I could get an appt. And then when I provided a sample, she said she didn't need one Confused

It's more the fanjo that's on fire. The side pains are aches as opposed to excrutiating.

3 days of nitrofuantoin is a short course. 5 days is more common. It's possible the antibiotics will have subdued the infection not killed the bugs off or have been the wrong antibiotics for the specific bacteria. You do need to get back to the GP as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, take paracetamol for pain and and fever. If no fever use a hot water bottle on the kidneys if painful. Drink lots of water, try one of the over counter remedies such as oasis or cystopurin, or plain bicarbonate or soda in water. Do visit the GP soon the prevent the infection worsening. Hopefully they can send off a sample to check sensitivity to the correct antibiotic.

Sings like you need a longer course of antibiotics to clear it properly..
as a PP said, drink plenty of fluids to try and flush it out if you , but ask for an appointment with either a doctor or nurse practitioner

Kidneys will give you lower back pain. Keep hydrated!
