Is this WBD costume too young?

My 8yr old (summer baby, won't be 9 till August) wants to go as the Cat in the Hat as he loves the books.

He's been having some issues with a small group of older girls who have been bullying him. His teacher has been brilliant and is on top of everything but I just don't want to expose him to any unnecessary ridicule.

I trying to gauge whether Cat in the Hat is a bit, well, babyish or am I overthinking it? In an ideal world, I'd just want him to stand up for himself and his choices, irrespective of what they would say, but he's not at that stage and my instinct is to protect him.

Is 8 too old? There are other choices that are more neutral I could suggest?

TIA

I wouldn't have considered Dr Seus babyish books.

You could steer him towards Just William if you want? Then he's got a ready catapult for if anyone is mean :o

But in seriousness, I think cat in the hat should be fine! Can you talk to his teacher and ask them to keep an eye out?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/03/2020 12:47

They aren’t babyish books at all.

I’d speak to the school about the bullying though.

bananafish · 02/03/2020 12:48

That's a very good idea about talking to his teacher. I hadn't thought of that, thank you!

Think I'll go ahead since it is his choice :)

Please let him go as the cat if that's what he wants. How utterly shitty that you even have to think about it and all because some parents can't raise their unkind kids properly. Hope it all gets sorted.

AdaColeman · 02/03/2020 12:55

I hope he wins the class prize for best costume! Star

Stompythedinosaur · 02/03/2020 12:55

I think Cat in the Hat is fine at 8!

ellenpartridge · 02/03/2020 13:00

Not to say he shouldn't do it, but yes I would think it's a much younger book than most would choose.

Marcipex · 02/03/2020 13:19

There are usually quite a few CatintheHats in Ks1
I’d steer him towards something a bit more grown up.
Don’t give the bullies any ammo.
Shouldn’t have to , but realistically, I think it’s wiser.

My son is 8 and going as cat in the hat. Hadn’t considered it might be too young, that’s what he picked.

CurlyMango · 02/03/2020 20:18

I would also say too young. There always seems to be a few wallies from where Sallie, how about that

Stompythedinosaur · 03/03/2020 21:26

Out school did world book day today as other things going on on Thurs. Dd1 is y4 and says she had a Cat in the Hat in her class. She didn't think it was odd in any way.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 03/03/2020 21:39

I think it's fine.

noideanow1 · 03/03/2020 21:42

I'm considerably older and going as The Cat in the Hat, he's got good taste!

BobbyBlueCat · 03/03/2020 21:49

The book series is aimed at 5-8 year olds with the band that TCintH falls in to being aimed at 'developing' readers rather than competent.

WBD is not meant to be a day dressing up in whatever Disney costume you above your kid in to. Your child is mean to dress as their favourite book character.
Your son is doing WBD exactly how it should be done.

Nurture his love of books and forget about the bullies. Because to be brutal, OP, if they have decided to bully him then if it's not this that they focus on then they'll find something else to bully him about. Let him enjoy himself on WBD.

mineofuselessinformation · 03/03/2020 21:54

Why are you worrying? I've seen sixth form students dressed as the Grinch, so I think it would be quite cool!
