Looking for really soft, 'sinkable' mattress/topper recommendations

Hoping the fount of wisdom that is Mumsnet can help me with a quest that's proving quite frustrating so far... crosses fingers

I have various health issues that mainly consist of permanent aches and pains (I suspect fibromyalgia, though that's not been confirmed) and I really struggle to get comfortable in bed at night, resulting in poor sleep most nights regardless what sort of mattress I sleep on. I've holidayed a few times in a holiday apartment where I've slept like a dream. The mattress is so soft and marshmallowy I just sink down into it like I'm on a cloud, and although people often seem to say that's not good for pain issues, for mine it seems to be what's needed as I sleep far better than I ever do on my newish memory foam mattress at home (which to my mind is a lot harder than one would expect an mf mattress to be) and wake without aches and pains which is normally unheard of.

Actually went to the lengths of stripping off the bed linen in the holiday apartment(!) to see what make of mattress it was, hoping to buy one the same, but I can't seem to find it on the market. I do know it's a Healthopaedic, has memory foam on top, I suspect pocket springs underneath (as I do feel supported under all the marshmallowiness when I sleep on it), I took pics of the mattress and its label and have looked everywhere online... and they don't seem to sell the same one, or if they do they've changed the appearance/label. Sod's law!!! Even been on to the manufacturers, but they've not got back to me after initially promising to do so, not too surprised as they seem to cater more to trade than individual customers.

I've been testing out various mattresses in bed shops but they all seem a lot firmer than what I'm after. So I'm wondering whether anyone can recommend me a mattress or even just a topper that's really soft/sinkable and squishy?? Have a memory foam mattress topper that goes some way towards recreating the feel, but it's a bit thin and shifts about on the bed.

Keeping my fingers crossed someone can help, and that this post doesn't disappear under the behemoth that is AIBU! Grin Thanks in advance...

Check out Richard Haworth website, they sell to individuals as well as into hotels,
I stay regularly at a lovely London hotel I liked the bed topper so much I checked the label and bought the exact same one. I think I bought a double bed size for less than 100£ it has big squares to keep the filling even and not bulge out to the edges over time. Love love love it OP!
Oh and they also do lovely pillows too in serious degrees of soft medium hard.

I have fibromyalgia. I bought a gel memory foam mattress topper from Amazon. It has a bamboo removable cover. the make is called Panda.
I can now sleep on my side. Good luck with finding a solution.

Hello Bringin,

I can recommend the Oxford 9000 regular tension mattress from Woolroom. It's the best mattress I've ever had (and I've tried a few as I suffer from sciatica). It's like sleeping on a cloud, so soft and, as it's made from all natural materials, keeps your temperature balanced through the night too. At first I worried that it would be too soft but I've had no back problems in the three months that I've been sleeping on it. And it gives me best night's sleep I've ever had. I've always had expensive memory foam mattresses prior to this but, after time, I find they dip and become uncomfortable.

Searching for the exact same thing OP!

I’ve never had so many aches and pains in my back and neck (well, had zero problems before) since getting an Emma mattress.
How they’re rated so highly is beyond me.
Bought their pillow too, and it’s so hard it’s like putting my head on a rock.

Bought a marshmallow topper and it’s worked for about a month, but now gone flat 😬

copperoliver · 01/03/2020 21:46

Maybe call the hotel and they might tell you. X

turnedabout · 01/03/2020 22:07

Yes other posters, I was worried about the high cost of new mattresses and what if I didn't like it, hence trying the Richard Haworth mattress topper at a reasonable price wasn't so bad if it didn't work out.

bringincrazyback · 01/03/2020 22:12

Hmm, some helpful ideas here, thanks pps... Smile

Also fibromyalgia here - I've got a Dunelm bounce back topper on our bed, and a single for if we travel anywhere, which makes a huge difference.

thedailymailisbogroll · 01/03/2020 22:52

Bodymould topper here- I had to get mine custom cut as I've got a mahoosive bed fucking fibro means I can only sleep when supported by pillows

However to do the job properly you need 3 ideally 3 inches or even better 4 inches of memory foam. Anything less than that and you'll end up feeling the mattress underneath. And you'll also need extra deep sheets as well for your bed because standard ones wont fit.

thedailymailisbogroll · 01/03/2020 23:01

Squashy enough for you?

The mattress is an IKEA hovag mattress- DH ikea hacked 2 double bed frames to make one colossally large bed because he got sick of being pushed out of bed due to my pillows.

Is it true ypu cant use electric blankets with those toppers? My fibro really benefits from the heat, I dont think I could give the blanket up.

LegArmpits · 01/03/2020 23:15

We just bought a Panda topper and I'm now literally so excited to go to bed every night 😂

Highly recommended it. Let it air overnight before you use it though. You also get a 30 day no questions asked return period.

plunkplunkfizz · 02/03/2020 07:00

If you can’t use an electric underblanket you could use an electric duvet or blanket.

Usernamealreadyexists · 02/03/2020 07:33

@turnedabout thanks for the tip. Did you get the clusterfill one? Does it keep its shape and not get flat ?

turnedabout · 02/03/2020 10:46

Yes! The cluster fill one, the squares keep the filling in the right place. Also take a look for discount codes online

mencken · 02/03/2020 10:53

no such thing as a soft mattress any more, even if marketed as such.

poundstretcher sell excellent memory foam mattress toppers, a double is £25 (quarter the Amazon price). Sold rolled so needs 72 hours spread out flat before you can use it - and they mean it. Also like all new mattress stuff it stinks so you will need those days before you can use it.

DaisyDreaming · 02/03/2020 10:54

I spent so much on toppers over the years! I now use these, I replace them every couple of years, sometimes I get the green one and sometimes the dark red, I can never decide which I prefer

Interesting to hear recommendations for the Panda, I've been thinking about that one based on good reviews I've read. Does it feel thick enough?

Yep that's the impression I'm getting, which is why it was such a joy to find one I could sink into! Grin Starting to look like a new topper is going to be my best way of recreating the sinkability - good to know re Poundstretcher, might have to investigate for that price!

I have a super soft mattress that I sink into. It's called bellagio in soft from latex sense. Softest mattress I've ever had. It's 100% natural talalay latex.

I found the panda topper much too hard for me and caused pain. I have ehlers-danlos syndrome.

CatMuffin · 02/03/2020 11:10

I've got the ikea hovag. It's very soft and marshmallowy. We've had ours a year and love them. The french exchange student was the first to sleep on mine when it was new and when i asked if the bed was comfortable she said "Très!"

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 02/03/2020 12:12

Crazy - the Panda topper is 2” thick.

bringincrazyback · 02/03/2020 15:22

Crazy - the Panda topper is 2” thick

Thanks, not bad then... I've had toppers of that thickness before and they've been comfortable, but they've tended to shift around on the bed a lot, especially as I'm a very restless sleeper due to the aches and pains and also a sleep disorder I have. I like the fact that the Panda has straps, think that's exactly what I need! lol

OP posts:
Bananasandchocolatecustard · 02/03/2020 16:24

Crazy - the Panda has a non- slip underneath so it doesn’t move around.

bringincrazyback · 02/03/2020 17:20

^ Even better! Definitely going to look into that one...
