Living next to horses

dorcarpo · 01/03/2020 13:50

We moved to our house 3 years ago. The people next door kept two horses and we had no problems. About 18 months ago they moved and the new neighbours also have two horses. Since then we seem to have many more flies at the back of our house and I was wondering whether it could be because maybe they aren't as particular about clearing up?

What would you like us to ask you about, given you've posted this in Ask Me Anything? Confused

Not sure what to say about the flies!

Elieza · 01/03/2020 14:11

Yes you may wish to ask for this to be moved from Ask Me Anything

There are indeed always flies round horses in summer. And round the muck heap. Where do they store their muck (ie straw or wood shavings bedding used in stables for them to lie on/do the toilet on)? Is it near your house or property?

WhiteBadger · 01/03/2020 14:31

I'm so sorry OP but did giggle at you being in the Ask me Anything section. :)

So I'll ask .... what colour are the horses? ;)

Sorry I'm new to mumsnet and couldn't find a topic about this to add my question to. I tried looking for a thread with 'horses' but couldn't find anything. Can you tell me how to move this thread to a different topic?
BTW both horses are brown

There’s a section called the tack room where the horse owners hang out. Try there?

Word to the wise, brown = bay when it’s a horse Wink🐴

WhiteBadger · 01/03/2020 15:17

No need to apologise @dorcarpo, we've all been new once!!

Yes I think getting this moved to tack room would be the best place for help.

LilyMumsnet · 01/03/2020 15:18

We'll move it for you now, OP. Flowers

dorcarpo · 01/03/2020 15:36

Thanks all. I'll learn :)

Are you not in the U.K.? Flies? You’ll have horseflies, they’re fun.

woodencoffeetable · 01/03/2020 16:26

are they dealing differently with the manure?

dorcarpo · 01/03/2020 16:38

I don't know as we don't know our neighbours very well.

PrayingandHoping · 01/03/2020 17:05

Could be for many reasons and depends on the flies

At this time of year with the winter we've had it could be midges. Most horse fields are resembling swamps from the end and amount of rainfall and it's so mild midges are appearing

That is nothing to do with the way they are managing it. It's just the extreme weather

DMCWelshcakes · 01/03/2020 17:10

The only problem we've had with living next to horses is being woken up by loud equine farting of a morning. Grin

dorcarpo · 01/03/2020 17:48

These are proper black flies, like house flies

OP posts:
MrsExpo · 01/03/2020 17:54

Horse owner here .... responsible horse owners poo pick their fields for a variety of reasons - ie they clean up after their animals so piles of poo are not left lying around to attract flies. Less meticulous folk leave the poo on the ground and it does attract flies. Maybe have a look and see if your neighbours are keeping their field poo free and if not ask them to poo pick more often.

britnay · 01/03/2020 18:47

Er, you can get just plain old brown horses. Bay horses are brown ones with a black mane and tail (and usually dark lower legs)

Evidencebased · 01/03/2020 18:53

So when is a brown horse a chestnut?

Welcome, dorcapo

britnay · 01/03/2020 19:05

Here is a nice colour chart: thehaybarn.wordpress.com/2017/07/16/what-colour-suits-your-horse-best/

Cherrysoup · 01/03/2020 19:35

My warmblood was seal brown, ‘officially’ brown, not bay!

longearedbat · 01/03/2020 19:40

It's a bit early in the year for flies. Are you in the uk? I haven't seen a fly for months - they won't appear until the water is warmer.

Flymetothetoon · 01/03/2020 20:24

I'm in the UK up north and there is currently a mahoosive bluebottle in my porch. No idea where he's come from but definitely there (no horses in this vicinity)

PrayingandHoping · 01/03/2020 20:25

Definitely too early for any kind of horse fly. Only the odd midge in swamp conditions!

Evidencebased · 01/03/2020 20:42

That's amazing britnay .Thank you.

TrainspottingWelsh · 01/03/2020 21:15

Agree with praying

MrsExpo incorrect. Granted if you keep them in tiny paddocks that are never rested it might be the only practical way to manage them. But there are plenty of other methods available

Tigerty · 01/03/2020 21:20

Are they cluster flies? That is they look like plump blue bottles but they’re really dopey?
