Following from my previous thread about house Reno, how the heck do you get started on your first one?

I'm contemplating a doer upper. It's a big house and we haven't done it before. It will be me project managing tradesmen, doing as much as I can myself. I have grown up (22) ds plus teen DC to get stuck in too. DH won't be too involved beyond okaying style and budget.

I do know some trusted traders and am very excited but what do I need to do first.

I'm getting excitedly ahead of myself though as DH will see it for the first time today and my builder friend is coming with me on Thursday if DH sees the potential. If he hates it it'll be a no.

Our house needed a lot doing when we purchased it. I suppose it depends if you are living in it or elsewhere. Because we were living in the house we just did chunks at a time. If it’s not structural,
Boiler and heating sorted first any electrical stuff.
Then we did decorating carpets etc in bedrooms
Then bathroom
Then kitchen/diner
Perhaps discuss with your builder friend they will see if you need to take walls down and replaster etc.
Make a list of priorities for me I could live with the old kitchen for a while but not the bathroom.
We got trades in for heating etc DH did other stuff with parents and friends help occasionally like fitting the kitchen. All depends on how much money you can throw at it and if you live there how much mess you can take at a time.
Have fun!

We've owned our (first!) house for almost a month. We got it for a great price for the size and location because of its state of decoration--liveable but not really to modern taste. (Think, patterned carpets and artex feature walls, but nothing wrong with the bones of the building itself.)

First thing we had was a gas safe engineer in for a boiler service and to replace a couple of radiators.

Upstairs we're doing one bed at a time, so we painted the walls in the first one to do and took up the carpet, and are now finishing the floors ourselves.

Downstairs the next thing booked in is plastering for said artex walls--and the others so that they're all up to the same level of finish.

After that's done we're having our floors downstairs laid. The cement under the carpet needs to be leveled out a bit first so it's a job to do before we have any furniture in there, and then we'll have laminate laid instead of carpet.

After that, the biggest bedroom is our next priority, and when that's done (walls and again, ripping out carpet and finishing wood floors) we'll get new furniture and move in there, and the current bedroom will be a guest bed. The third bed isn't needed as much yet so it'll be last.

If we had to redo the kitchen or bath we would have done that first with the boiler service and heating repair, but luckily they are fine until we want to change them.
