Unsure if chicken pox? DD 2.5

Is it a good idea to take her to the local pharmacy? I'm just conscious if it is chicken pox, she could infect others. Not lots of spots but I suspect it's chicken pox. She has a temp in the night too.

I'd wait for the spots to appear, my little one had a little temp and we where at the docs the day before for something else. The next day he was covered in spots all over.

Maybe ring 111?

Lifesabeach86 · 01/03/2020 07:06

Do you have a photo?

Cupcakegirl13 · 01/03/2020 07:14

Even if it is chicken pox as long as she is not too poorly she can be managed at home with usual over the counter calpol , calomine etc. Nothing a Dr or pharmacist can do unless you’re worried it’s a very severe case with added complications.

That's a couple from her back. She's got a fair few in her groin area. I first noticed yesterday morning and I'm wondering if this is it or if more might come. She also has swimming lesson today so I can't take her if it is. I can ring 111 but she seems well in herself now? I feel a bit silly calling them!

Belly

TheNoiseHurts · 01/03/2020 07:20

Yeah I'd say that's the pox

TokyoSushi · 01/03/2020 07:22

Yep, I'd say that's them too

JungleJenna · 01/03/2020 07:23

Thank you! Should I be expecting more to come? I shall have to cancel swimming.

I think it looks like chicken pox too. When dd had them I wasn't quite sure to begin with but within an hour or two she had quite a lot more and there was no doubt.

lornathewizzard · 01/03/2020 07:34

Both my kids were well in themselves when the spots first started. Didn't really start feeling off until more spots (of which there were lots!). Hopefully it's a mild case for your DC.

MinnieMountain · 01/03/2020 07:49

No need to ring 111 if she's well in herself.

Do you have someone who can get to a pharmacist for anti-itch stuff? Or give her an oat bath if you have them. It's also a good activity during quarantine.

DS had hundreds of spots and didn't eat much for a few days but there's not much you can do apart from keep them comfortable.

Ciwirocks · 01/03/2020 07:58

Yep definitely looks like chicken pox. No point going to the gp unless she is quite unwell as they will just look at it and say the same. If you google chicken pox spots you will find an image that shows the various stages of the spots, they are quite easy to identify from that.

TheNoiseHurts · 01/03/2020 08:18

Expect hundreds to come.

florababy84 · 01/03/2020 09:06

DD had it like your pictures and it developed over the next half day but she didn't end up getting that many overall. She had been vaccinated so the GP said it was a mild case.

dementedpixie · 01/03/2020 09:10

Keep her away from people until the spots crust over - normally 5-7days. I never took mine to the GP but did ring them to say the kids had it

SinkGirl · 01/03/2020 09:12

Yes, expect a lot more. DT1 looked like that when it started, he was then covered and it turned from these little blisters into large pustules. At this early stage it wasn’t itchy, but it got much worse.

Hopefully she won’t get it too badly.

Personally I found all the specific chicken pox gels etc useless but Eurax cream was brilliant as were baths with oats and classic head and shoulders. Piriton liquid to help with the itching and sleep if it’s bad - we ended up with phenergan elixir which is stronger

SinkGirl · 01/03/2020 09:14

And yes, don’t go to the GP unless she gets very unwell or signs of an infection. Both of mine got infections, one very nasty. We had to wait outside the practice as it’s very dangerous for some people.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/03/2020 09:16

Remember not to give Ibuprofen- paracetamol is ok though.
And socks on hands at night helps them not to scratch.

ImportantWater · 01/03/2020 09:17

It can be very mild. DS1 had it, just a few spots but enough to make it obvious, but DS2 also had it and he had like, one spot. I wouldn’t even have known he had it if the doctor hadn’t said.

StylishDuck · 01/03/2020 10:24

That definitely looks like chicken pox. Both mine started with a few spots like that and within 24 hrs were covered. Be prepared for at least one horrendous night when she just can't settle and then it should get better after that. Fill a sock with porridge oats and put it in the bath, squeeze it so that the water turns milky. Head and shoulders shampoo is also good in the bath to help the itching. You can also buy a mousse over the counter (I think it's called Poxclin or something) that is nice and cool for putting on the spots if she'll let you. No ibuprofen but paracetamol is ok. Good luck!!

BikeRunSki · 01/03/2020 10:29

Looks like pox, particularly if it started on her back.

She may well get hundreds more spots in the next few days.

Witchend · 01/03/2020 11:54

You may get more, you may not.

Dd1 only had a few more than that.
Dd2 by the end only had one spot. It just covered her entire body. She was only 6 months old, and she was ill enough for the doctor to keep coming round to check on her.
Ds had so many that they were worried that they were inside too. They certainly covered the inside of his mouth.

StylishDuck · 01/03/2020 12:48

@Witchend My DS had them in the inside of his mouth too. He was 15 months. On the plus side, he stopped sucking a dummy because it was too sore and never went back to it again. Silver linings and all that 🤷🏻‍♀️

JungleJenna · 01/03/2020 19:35

Thanks for all your comments. There's been loads more over the course of the day! Definitely chicken pox and some have got big a pussed up. She's starting to get some right close to her eye, and right on the water line. Should I be worried about this? Also lots in her hair, how do I soothe these as she's got long hair?
The ones on her noonie are awful bless her.

OP posts:
bobstersmum · 01/03/2020 20:13

My three had it last year, dd was only just 2 at the time, I bathed them morning and night in a mixture of baking soda and salt, then slathered them in Virasoothe, it was worth every penny, also piriton at night to stop itching. The ones in her hair I would still dab a little Virasoothe if you can get at them, but don't worry unless they're bothering her, all of mine had them all over their privates, I used for that. Chickenpox is horrible! My eldest was 6 at the time and he got them the worst, they were in his mouth and throat and there was hardly a space on his back without a spot, he was really poorly.
