Does listening to certain songs make you sad for a moment?

There are a few songs that I could listen to or come on the tv/radio and I automatically think of a certain person or time in my life or whatever I’m going through at the time. Could be happy all day and then listen to one song and all sorts of thoughts come into my head!

'Drugs Don't Work' by The Verve made me cry for years after DDad died of cancer and 'Wires' by Athlete (particularly the line 'got to see this through') after DS was born prematurely.

SagaBauer · 29/02/2020 20:56

Yes I get like that too! Most are attached to relationships which didn't work out, or when I was going through a particularly bad time. Some of them aren't even sad songs, just linked to a rubbish time!

SecretWitch · 29/02/2020 20:58

@CountFosco, 💐

Songs are very evocative to me. There are a certain few that I love but cannot listen to as they revive memories of a lost love.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 29/02/2020 21:01

Oh yes! “Don’t speak” by No Doubt always seems to be played on the radio at the same time each year and reminds me of the time DH and I very nearly split up at the start of our relationship because of outside complications. Even though it was over 23 years ago it still takes me back to that time and wondering what to do for the best.

StoorieHoose · 29/02/2020 21:01

vapour trail by Ride wooshes me back to early 90s and it always knocks me for 6 when I hear it

Fairylea · 29/02/2020 21:03

Oh gosh so many!

Fast car - Tracy Chapman is the main one that comes to mind. Story of my life!

At the moment I can’t listen to a new song by the Script called “Same Time”. It’s supposed to be a love song but actually reminds me of my beloved Grandad and grief.

parrotonmyshoulder · 29/02/2020 21:03

I really sobbed at a song the other day. It was ‘Piazza New York Catcher’ by Belle and Sebastian. I loved it years ago and still do, and it reminded me, I guess, of when DH and I were young. We almost split up recently and have really worked on falling in love again and staying together after 21 years. So it was the sadness for what I nearly lost, I suppose. Anyway, I sobbed in his arms for ages in the kitchen.

LaneBoy · 29/02/2020 21:08

I listened to Unintended by Muse for the first time in years a few months ago and I sobbed. Just took me back to when I met DH, when that album was one of my favourites - we were both in a really bad place and shouldn’t have even met really, but we did and here we are many many years and three kids later. In some ways my MH is just that bad again now and so is his (both of us trying to deal with the trauma that caused us to meet) and some of the lines in the song are just so apt.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 29/02/2020 21:08

Neil Young “Like a Hurricaine” was me and my ex’s song. And it always makes me sad, especially the line, “You could have been anyone to me,” because really, I just wanted to be in a relationship and he was handy.

“I want to love you but I’m getting blown away,” it still makes me feel guilty.

Seeitsortit · 29/02/2020 23:05

Oh god - so many.......
The latest one if Secret for the mad, - end up sobbing like a baby....

Davros · 29/02/2020 23:22

Reason To Believe by Rod Stewart

JustBecauseItWorkedForYou · 29/02/2020 23:31

Yes so many and for many reasons

Some to be sad for the loss of loved ones.
Some remind me of abusive exes..
Some remind me of good times we had and feel sad that I won't get those days back.

But last Yr I was listening to a bit of country on YouTube and it was on a shuffle. And a song called 'you can let go now daddy' came on. At first I was like ah this is beautiful.. I'd like this to be my dad and daughter dance at my wedding.. Then the song continued about' letting go to daddy so he can pass away.
I cried and cried.. OK so I was hormonal and pregnant at the time.
In fact now 6w PP. I had a day recently that I felt everything was too much.. I'm not a crier but I knew having a good old sob would help. So I played sad songs.
DH said I was a different person when he got in that day haha

Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol

I love this song but it reminds me of someone I loved who died after several months in hospital, so sad, I miss him.

Rhodes2015again · 01/03/2020 00:06

Quite a recent song, memories by maroon 5.
My mum died on 22 November last year and it was on the radio a lot at that time, I know it’ll always take me back when I hear it.
I think the lyrics are about the bands manager passing away.
It’s a sad song but the last verse is quite positive so doesn’t feel morbid.

Winterlife · 01/03/2020 00:08

Yes. This one.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=NEY4LxORCeo

But I think you have to be a certain age to get it.

Babyroobs · 01/03/2020 00:24

Yes definitely. One song from when a patients husband bought the Cd for her and then she died the next day unexpectedly, she was young. I have to turn off the radio.

PloptheBarnOwl · 01/03/2020 00:58

Earlier today I caught a few seconds of "Dance With My Father" by Luther Vandross and had to switch it off sharpish or I would have been sobbing. RIP my dad 2008 xx

salsmum · 01/03/2020 01:04

Love of my life by queen, I chose it for my husbands funeral. He passed suddenly aged just 56 he really was the love of my life and my soulmate.

Ladyratterley · 01/03/2020 01:13

Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles. It’s so sad and depressing. I just can’t listen to it

AnotherMurkyDay · 01/03/2020 01:27

Yeah some songs make me actually cry. The first few bars will start playing when I'm out and about with headphones in and I have to skip the track quickly to avoid tearing up. Other songs send me down memory lanes I would rather avoid. Sometimes I think I'm fine "oh I used to love this track" and then when I can't sleep that night remembering a bunch of stuff I hadn't thought about in years I think "and this is why I don't need to listen to it very often."

Because I actually don't need to remember the name of the boy who sat on my table in year 10 Spanish on a rainy Tuesday in 4th period two decades ago. It really doesn't matter. I think it Began with an "R"

Music is like therapy but it's not always predictable or helpful. It just takes you where it takes you. Mostly it makes me happy. But some songs shatter me into pieces when I least expect it.

ParkheadParadise · 01/03/2020 01:29

You'll never walk alone
I have a video of my late dd singing this in a pub when Celtic won the Scottish cup.
Danny boy
Fields of Athenry
My dads party songs

FthisS · 01/03/2020 07:05

Promise me by Beverley Craven makes me so sad. It reminds me of being little and my mother bringing men back from the boats every night whilst being left alone with my 10yr old sister.

Ceebeegee · 01/03/2020 16:57

Chasing Rainbows by Shed Seven. Instantly get goose bumps and a lump in my throat. Reminds me of "the one who got away". It was his favourite song and it takes me back to being in the car with him in the summer, windows down, this song playing and him singing to me. One of the happiest moments ever yet it pains me to hear it.

SimonJT · 01/03/2020 16:59

Yes, a couple in particular are a reminder of how I hurt an ex but also a reminder that we didn’t work out. We both recovered, but it’s still hard when he performs it.

AsMuchUseAsAMarzipanDildo · 01/03/2020 17:04

FthisS that sounds awful, I’m so sorry Flowers
