How to have the period talk with asd DD

Hi all,

Posted on SN chat also.

Looking for some advice please! I need to have the dreaded period talk with Dd 11, she’s moderate ASD. She’s filled out this past few months and gets an occasional spot. Some development on her chest too. I have looked at various books and was going to compile a social story for her but am in two minds.

She’s a very clever girl, but is very dramatic and she has absolutely no filter! She wouldn’t think twice of announcing to the world that she has her period or ask others if they have theirs 🙈

How did you broach the subject with your dds? Any advice/suggestions welcome. Thanks.

I got my dd (14) a couple of books about periods/growing up for girls with asd. Although she didn’t want to read them, the books helped me to explain everything in the right way for her. I’m sorry but I don’t know how to do links but I found the books quite easily on Amazon.

@Skybluepink123 thanks, I did have a quick browse on line. There are a few I might get for her. It’s starting the conversation I’m having the most trouble with 🙈

Is she unaware of periods? Dont you have them?
My dd started at 10, but has been aware of periods for years so was quite matter of fact when she started. She is autistic too.
