Small little city cars on motorways - how does yours cope?

I'm looking for a new (to me) car and like the idea of the tiny little city car types - Up, Aygos, Citogos etc. But, I don't want to feel I'm being blown over on the motorway. What are they like to drive? Are some better than others?

Thanks

My sons UP is fabulous for a small car. It's good on motorways and extremely economical with petrol.

TheDoctorDances · 29/02/2020 14:45

My old Aygo could only be described as a liability on a motorway, it felt like it was going to tip around slight bends at 60-70mph. Got rid and bought something a little bigger which felt much safer.

Use my Aygo on the motorway daily, it's great!

Hyundai i10 might be bigger than you were thinking, but is fine on the motorway

SwedishEdith · 29/02/2020 14:56

Hmm, someone else has said similar to me about feeling blown around in the Aygo - in high winds, not just normal conditions. But they look so cute!

I had an A class which was just about ok on a motorway. Wouldn’t get on if you regularly drive on a motorway though but for occasional trips it’s fine. Absolutely fantastic in town though.

PurpleDaisies · 29/02/2020 14:59

My fiesta is fantastic on the motorway. It does have a turbo though.

millymae · 29/02/2020 15:01

Is a Corsa too big? We’ve driven them for years - the last two we sold on had each had well over 100,000 miles on the clock and a fair proportion of those miles had been on motorways.
My parents are driving a Corsa at the moment and do at least 100 miles every week on a motorway.

gibblescsay · 29/02/2020 15:02

Love my aygo on the motorway, it's a new model

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 29/02/2020 15:05

I have a 2005 panda, it's amazing on the motorway. It's not fast enough to overtake more than a lorry, top speed is around 90, bit I can do 200miles easily and cheaply.
I would strongly suggest cruise control, it's the only thing I miss on motorways.

SwedishEdith · 29/02/2020 15:06

No, Corsa, Hyundai and Fiesta are all fine options as well. Was just drawn to the really dinky little cars for nippiness. Don't need speed and don't use motorways daily but don't want to think I need to avoid them as the car feels unstable.

Would a Micra be ok? Mine’s always been good on motorways. It does get a bit affected by crosswinds, but so does our big family car - I’ve never felt like I was in danger with it though, just been aware of needing to compensate.

Loved my Hyundai i10 - coped well with long trips for me and DS.

Futureplanning · 29/02/2020 15:14

I got rid of my Aygo as I felt too unsafe on the motorway in it.

I'd had a particularly bad journey in torrential rain and all I could see when I looked in the rear view mirror was DS very close to the front of the lorry driving up my arse. It just felt as if there was no rear to the car to take any potential impact.

Mine was an older model though, I think the newer ones feel more sturdy.

ginandbearit · 29/02/2020 15:23

Boom around in UP doing airport runs so m25 m23 ..not only carries huge amount with back seat down (ok so only one passenger mostly ) but fast if you stir the engine and plenty stable .

PurpleCrazyHorse · 29/02/2020 15:31

I have an Aygo (2014) and I don't drive it on the motorway unless I really have to. I'm so tiny I'm easily missed by lorries and I'm so light I do get buffered in the wind. In fact, my Aygo is black too, which is a poor colour choice for such a small car; I usually drive with my headlights on the whole time as I'm pretty much invisible.

On the plus side, it's super cheap to run and obviously fits in tiny car parking spaces.

Chociefish · 29/02/2020 15:47

I've had a yaris, it's the next size up from an aygo and it was a fab little car. I did regular long motorway journeys in it and it never felt too small. Ultra reliable and very economical to run. Loved it.

Babyroobs · 29/02/2020 15:49

I never take my C1 on a motorway, I feel like I don't have control over it if it's windy.

MuddyPuddlesAndPrettyBubbles · 29/02/2020 15:50

I do about 50 miles a day on a motorway and three lane A roads in an Up. It can be a little slow to get up to speed compared to other cars but holds the speed really well and feels safe. Economical and comfy too.

SwedishEdith · 29/02/2020 16:20

Hmm, the Aygo isn't doing too well here. Like the Yaris as well so will look at that. The Up is coming out well (and the Skoda Citigo is pretty much the same car, I believe).

I had a Citroen C1 1 litre and it was scary on the motorway. It takes a million years to get up to 70mph, even with your foot to the floor, when you first get onto the motorway and you end up with lorries overtaking you 🙈. I didn’t find it too buffety but I agree that black is pretty much invisible, at least get a very bright colour.

It was even scarier on back roads at night though as the head lights are so weak that you can hardly see anything and there are far fewer street lights than there used to be.

Needsomezzzz · 29/02/2020 16:56

I have a citygo and no issues at all with long drives or motorways. It's a great little car.
Also had a Jazz which was also very reliable.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 29/02/2020 16:57

Mini too big? I've had 6 of them, only just traded in my last one for BMW 1 series as they had better equipment and offers! Never felt it unsafe on motorways, always feels planted to the road. Nippy too.

Disfordarkchocolate · 29/02/2020 16:57

Our Hyundai i10 was great. Very economical and so easy to park. No problems on the motorway.

amazedmummy · 29/02/2020 16:58

I had a smart forfour and drove it to work down the motorway 50 miles a day. It was absolutely grand. Only changed cars because there wasn't much room for DS and a pram etc.
