If you were on the board to decide the UK Eurovision song & could choose any song from the back catalogue of UK artists

I listened to this years entry from James Newman & hope it won’t be another null points. He’s a credible song writer but not sure it will stand out enough. To have a real chance of winning (politics apart) what song would you choose to put through?

Lily the pink by the Scaffold it's just quirky enough to win.

Isn't the melody nicked from (checks ...) a folk song ?

(Pauses to wonder how come Italian DF played it on accordion ...)

thesurreyyouth · 28/02/2020 22:18

It’s certainly on the quirky side rather than camp pop with catchy chorus & a dance that will be a Tik tok craze

Id re enter our Eurovision from 1994 ( i was in school and loved it)

Torvean · 29/02/2020 01:09

Ps Her daughter is Eliza Doolittle who released some songs a while ago.

NewtonPulsifer · 29/02/2020 01:21

Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up. Reckon a good Rick Rolling is overdue.

thesurreyyouth · 29/02/2020 07:54

Eliza looks so just like her mum. @Torvean you’ve made a valid point. What kids now love or even know the Eurovision song? Perhaps it was the Terry Wogan touch

I heard this year song on TV, nice song, but not something that will stand out enough or is catchy enough. We'll get another nil I think.
I agree with those who say we need something young and quirky.

When I was at Uni, in 1985, my housemates (who came from Northern Ireland) Republican brother sat down with a grid he'd made to allow him to show how countries were ganging up on the Irish. Apparently at the end he'd proved it.

I am really surprised at that. They normally get better votes than us I thought.

TSSDNCOP · 01/03/2020 12:08

You’ve either got to go super up-tempo with primary colours, acrobats, manic grins eg Bucks Fizz, Don’t Stop Me Now, I’ve Got A Feeling and leave no stone unturned in pursuit of cheese, or totally the other way with a Carpenters It’s Only Just Begun with a girl on a stool with an accusative guitar

TSSDNCOP · 01/03/2020 12:10

Acoustic Grin

An accusative guitar would be good in the we need a Deal climate though Grin

DGRossetti · 01/03/2020 12:23

Don’t Stop Me Now

Surely "We are the champions", or "Somebody to love" are far cheesier ?

If you want quirky "Seven Seas of Rhye" or "Bicycle Race" might be worth a punt.

safariboot · 01/03/2020 14:21

I mean it has to be new songs though.

The thing is you look at a lot of the winners and they were big hits in Europe, topping the charts in many countries, before the contest itself. The singers are often, though not always, somewhat well-known already. That hasn't really happened for a British entry in a long time.

I've not heard My Last Breath yet. James Newman's got a strong songwriting pedigree but as a singer he's rather obscure.

If the BBC want to do well in Eurovision, I say get a performer with a history of chart success in mainland Europe. There've actually been a fair few British artists who've been bigger in European countries than they were at home. The songwriter shouldn't write "a Eurovision song", they should just write something they like and they think mainland Europe will like.

longearedbat · 01/03/2020 14:46

I don't think we'll ever win, even if a song is brilliant, however, 'wake me up before you go go' by Wham would be my vote for an instantly catchy song.
I remember when ABBA won with Waterloo, how that was instantly a sing along song and it was obvious it would win - it was head and shoulders above everything else. (That was 1974 if I remember correctly!)

thesurreyyouth · 01/03/2020 18:35

I think Katrina and the waves were well known established artists and went on to win. Not sure if they were already successful in Europe. I know we can’t enter an old song, I just posed a question imagining a situation like the film Yesterday when no one had heard of the Beatles and so heard their music for the first time.

I can’t see a credible successful UK singer/band agreeing to sign up to the potential humiliation of the Eurovision let alone the risk to future chart success

I've never understood why, when as a country,we punch well above our weight when it comes to popular music, yet, for the last 20 odd years,we can't manage to enter a song in this contest that earns more than a few points. If any!

ALongHardWinter · 01/03/2020 18:49

And I think 'Crazy little thing called love' by Queen might just stand a chance. Very catchy!

Gogolego · 01/03/2020 19:07

ALongHardWinter
I've often wondered this. And how come we don't more European artists in the charts.

Hirsutefirs · 01/03/2020 19:14

Bing Bang Bong, This is my Song.

thesurreyyouth · 01/03/2020 19:32

So, going by majority a Queen song needs to be entered. Now just need to wipe everyone’s memory of Queen then introduce them as a new band to the world via the competition - WIN!
