DS liked the 13 Storey tree house books

But he's read them all and there's not another due out for ages.

He's a very reluctant reader. About the only other thing I can get him to read is the Phoenix Comics which we subscribe to and he loves.

He's 7. He likes maths and science and funny things. I don't want great literature, I just want him to read SOMETHING.

He loves being read too and I try to do it every day.

So please you wonderful mumsnetters what can I optimistically leave lying about the house next?

At 7 DS was very into the Sea Quest and Beast Quest books. He would also devour The Beano. I think he was just getting into Tom Gates and Wimpy Kid too, possibly.

Sounds like my DS!

He loves the Treehouse books and the Phoenix too. There are lots of Phoenix books (Looshkin, the penguin detective etc) which will be stories he's read before but DS always gets them from the library. He also likes:

Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Dog Man
Future Rat Boy
Barry Loser

all of which are available in sets quite cheaply!

Escape from Mr Lemoncello’s library and the books that come after. A lot of fun and magic!

One of mine is into that type of books, although he’s a couple of years older, but: diary of a wimpy kid, planet Omar, Tom gates, anything by David baddiel

Cheeseontoast4 · 28/02/2020 13:53

My son is the same though now almost 10 ... the books mentioned like Wimpy Kid and Tom Gates have been winners . Also football books ... there’s a series about players .

The only other success I’ve had is when I found a story about my sons rather niche sporting interest ... otherwise he never gets past the first 50 pages of a story!

Cheeseontoast4 · 28/02/2020 13:54

Oh also the large illustrated Harry Potter books

timetomoveon · 28/02/2020 14:03

As well as the treehouse books, DS6 loves:
The BEANO
Dogman
Captain Underpants
Mr penguin
Mac B kid spy (or something like that)
Ninja Kid

My older DS loved horrible histories from this age but DS6 isn’t interested so maybe yours might.

My 7 yo DD and all her friends love Geronimo Stilton. We are in Asia and they are v popular here, not sure about in the UK but if you can get them the kids go mad for them here. Lovely illustrations and colours and tons of books in the series .

CommunistLegoBloc · 28/02/2020 14:08

Charlie Changes Into A Chicken and its associated sequels. Actually very funny and he's just the right age.

LER83 · 28/02/2020 14:13

Anything by David Walliams, wimpy kid, tom gates and some books by an author called Mark Lowery, had him in stitches!

OnTheEdgeOfTheNight · 28/02/2020 14:24

As well as the hilarious Tom Gates books, these series may suit :

Stick Dog www.amazon.co.uk/Stick-Dog-Tom-Watson/dp/0007494823?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Julius Zebra
www.amazon.co.uk/Julius-Zebra-Rumble-Gary-Northfield/dp/1406354929?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

And the "how to train your dragon" books, and the Wizards of once, both by Cressida Cowell

The Wombles books are popular here too

Planet Stan - my life in pie charts

Danger is everywhere, by Dr Noel Zone the greatest dangerologist in the worl

Kid Normal

Diary of pig

Claude in the city / Claude in the country

Casper Candlewacks and the time travelling toaster

We have all the above at the local library

PleaseSeeMeNow · 28/02/2020 14:29

Dogman
Captain Underpants
Diary of Pig
David Walliams

I hate Diary of a Wimpy kid but DS likes it.

gloominous · 28/02/2020 16:29

Just coming on to second Charlie Changes Into a Chicken, which my 13 Storey obsessed 6.5 year old loves. Didn't realise there was a sequel! He's also been getting really into David Walliams.

SavoyCabbage · 28/02/2020 16:34

My dd loved There's Danger Everywhere which is similarly written.

VenusClapTrap · 28/02/2020 16:42

Mine loves the Stinkbomb & Ketchup Face books.

Lowbrow · 28/02/2020 17:08

The Weirdo books are great for reluctant readers. There are about 8-10 in the series now. Kids love the humour and the books have become very popular in Australia.

NarniaBanarnia · 28/02/2020 17:30

Mr Gum. Please please please buy him the Mr Gum books.

Usually available as a set from Book People.

They’re so so SO funny

NarniaBanarnia · 28/02/2020 17:30

Sorry for all the repeated words. I really love Mr Gum 🤣

listsandbudgets · 28/02/2020 17:39

thank you so much. I'm going to book mark this and buy him a variety to see what happens.

I've just ordered a Gironomo Stilton so we will see how it goes.

DS 8 is similar, he's in Yr 4 and his reading stamina is improving. He's always been competent but reluctant! Lots of unfinished books & the Treehouse books are the only books he won't put down.
He's recently enjoyed David Baddiel's The Taylor Turbochaser and Kick by Mitch Johnson & when he was a bit younger he would read some of the famous five colour short stories.
The Treehouse authors also authored 'Just Kidding' and 'Just Annoying'

I just ordered some books for him to try and to sustain his bookworm sibling, I didn't realise The Book People are closing down (sob!)

SideHustle · 28/02/2020 21:14

Tom Gates
Horrible history / science / maths / geography

peppaminttea · 28/02/2020 21:18

Another author I haven't seen mentioned yet is Pamela Butchart. The baby aliens series is great. (Baby aliens ate my teacher, to wee or not to wee, plus others in the series).

Haggisfish · 28/02/2020 21:19

Oooh following thanksgiving you op!
