What happened to storms E, F, G, H and I? It's only a couple of weeks since we had storm Dennis.

Don't they just keep working through the alphabet?

The Spanish named it.

Maybe they got in first.

Pronunciation is going to be fun.

4amWitchingHour · 27/02/2020 22:42

The Spanish met office did get there first, therefore we use their name. The next one the UK names will be Ellen though

BridgeToTerabithia · 27/02/2020 22:44

Different countries name the same storm different names.

Either that or E, F , G H and I got blown away....

MyOtherProfile · 27/02/2020 22:53

Oh! So next time we get in there first it will be Ellen and the next time the Spanish get in there first it will be something like Karl? Do they even use k at the beginning of names in Spain?

How do the deceide who names it ?And what gender /sex ( can never remember the number preferred term) it will be?🤔

MyOtherProfile · 29/02/2020 03:40

Sounds like it's just whoever gets the first has first dibs on the name, x2boys

It goes male/female names alternately. We think naming storms would be a great job!

FrankieGoesToLiverpool · 29/02/2020 06:11

Meteorological expert here...

Irish and UK meteorological offices were about to name it Ellen and then the Spanish did it first. So Jorge sticks. Only one name allowed to avoid confusion.

Our next storm will be Ellen if named by us.

Names are chosen from a list created by the Met Office and the public each year and you can vote for them!

Stay safe in Jorge everyone xx

FrankieGoesToLiverpool · 29/02/2020 06:14

Also @x2boys this year in the UK it went girl (A, C, E etc) and boy (B, D, F). Next year it will swap over!

Rocketinapocket · 29/02/2020 06:35

I was (slightly) cross about this as my child had been looking forward to to their name being the storm name. (Lighthearted)

MyOtherProfile · 29/02/2020 09:04

@FrankieGoesToLiverpool that's really helpful. How do they decide which country names it? Is it really first one to get there? Is it announced somewhere formally?

Oh that’s interesting to know. I did wonder what Jorge was doing on the Uk and Ireland name list.

lubeybooby · 29/02/2020 09:07

it's Spains named storm and we just kept the name I think

MondeoFan · 29/02/2020 09:10

@FrankieGoesToLiverpool I thought we had Storm Ellen last weekend? I'm sure they said on news it was Ellen. As it turned out it wasn't too bad

x2boys · 29/02/2020 09:24

So can any country name the storm?

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 29/02/2020 09:33

www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-storm-centre/index

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 29/02/2020 09:34

Our list is actually UK/Ireland/Netherlands which is why we sometimes see unexpected names like Pieter

StormGerda · 29/02/2020 09:35

Rather cheeky pushing in if you ask me. Wink
