Kitchen leak and house Insurance advice needed

Hi, we recently discovered we have a bad leak under floor in our kitchen and insurance want to lift all the tiles, remove kitchen etc.& need to bring in humidifiers etc. Apparently they plan to remove kitchen, sort floor and then put kitchen back. They’ve admitted that they’ll probably ruin granite work top taking it off so will cover the cost of that but plan to put cupboards back as they were. Is that possible? Has anyone experience of that and did it turn out ok?

The thing is the kitchen is about 10+ years old and dark and dated ( but very good quality) and we planned to replace at some stage.. But maybe in 3 or 4 years when we had saved up? So I’m wondering should we think of doing it now, think my dad would lend us the money or we could add to the mortgage? Would insurers pay any of the costs since they would have had to pay to remove/reinstall properly? What is reasonable to ask? I just wonder is it silly to have put back old cupboards with a new worktop and tiles and perhaps they would then be ruined in few years if we replace the kitchen.

I’d really appreciate any advice if anyone has any knowledge or experience of this? We’re pretty clueless about all this.

Speak to your insurers. We did similar years ago, we discussed that work to be undertaken and we were happy with the extra that we had to pay.

I agree - you could ask for a cash settlement based on the estimates - or ask their recommended builders for a quote for the extra work.

For accidental damage such as this our insurers paid out and we spent the money as we wished on repairs so reallocated the money in some areas.

Thanks everyone. A cash settlement has never been mentioned but I will chat to the loss assessor about this. The plan seems to be to fix each part as it needs and I suppose I’m wondering do we wait and see how kitchen comes out etc.
